Provincial Chess Tournament winners:
Two Brock Corydon students will be competing in the Canadian Chess Challenge of 2011 in Victoria, British Columbia May 19-21.  Alexander won the Provincial Chess Tournament for Grade 5, and Ron won the Provincial Chess Tournament for Grade 2.  We all wish them good luck!
 
School Patrol get first place:
The School Education Officers of the Winnipeg Police Service judge the School Patrols on their performance throughout the year. This year’s judging has now been completed and selections have been made among the Best of the Patrols in each School Division.
 
Our School Patrols have been awarded First Place in the Winnipeg School Division South District. Congratulations to the Patrol Squads, Stacie Edgar, Patrol Supervisor, and Liane Brandt, Crossing Guard.
 
The patrols and supervisors will join other school patrol squads in a parade from the Forks to the Manitoba Legislature on May 5 to mark the 75th anniversary of the School Patrol Program in Manitoba. In addition, there will be a school board patrol reception on May 25th  at Tec Voc, where all first place school patrols who are able to attend will be presented with a plaque.

Winnipeg Harvest thanks Brock Corydon School for participating in Operation Donation 2011.  Our contributions helped raise 43,861 pounds of food to help feed hungry people in Manitoba.
 
Earth Day Celebrations:
This year, the Grade 6 Hebrew Bilingual Class decided to organize an Earth Day Celebration! The theme that they came up with is “What can YOU do to help the Earth?” What we are trying to teach the other students is that it is important to keep our Earth clean, healthy, and happy. The following activities are what the students participated in:
The Earth - There is a sculpture made of found objects at Polo Park that inspired some of our students to create a collage of recycled materials. Students used small items to create an artistic representation of the Earth.
The Importance of Composting – Students discovered how much waste we produce as a school at lunch. We taught the students what can go into the compost bins and what happens to it and why it is beneficial. We are also planning a Litterless Lunch as a result of this activity.
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle – Students played a game where they learned the different types of materials that go into the recycle bin versus the garbage can.
Wasting Paper – The student created small books from plain paper that the Grade 6 students found in the recycle bins in our classrooms. They talked about how we should reuse paper and use both sides of a sheet of paper. 
Dirty Water – The students will learn about polluted water and how to make dirty water clean by making a filter from a pop bottle.
Electricity – The students will participate in a scavenger hunt where they will learn about energy efficient light bulbs.
Walking to School – The students will learn why walking, biking, skateboarding, rollerblading to school is more environmentally friendly than driving every day.  
Jeopardy – The student will play the game on a SMART Board and will learn different facts about the environment.
All the Grade 6 students were involved in running the stations. All the Grade 5 students lead the groups from one station to the next and stayed with the group at all times. 
 
Toy Sale in support of Japan:
Room 3, Grade 5 students decided to help Japan after the horrible tragedy that the earthquake and tsunami caused there. We held a toy sale of gently used recycled toys that the students donated, and raised $305.67. Morah Paula invited the President of the Japanese association to talk with the class. She told the students about her sister who lives in Japan and who survived the earthquake and tsunami. The students had a lot of questions which she answered.
