Daughters of the Sea Hannah is the first book in a projected series by New York Times bestselling author Kathryn Lasky. Girls in grades 4-7 ages 8 to 12 would very much enjoy this book. It is quite a long book with 310 pages, but you may not even realize it and you have already read half the book. This book takes place around 20 years ago in the 1990’s. The book is a fiction book about a girl who is drawn to the sea. Billowing waves soothe her, but flat land makes her sick. She knows there’s something wild in her that’s different, wrong and deeply thrilling.
Only one person seems to know who or what Hannah is. He is a guest in the house where she works as a scullery girl, and his fascinating gaze follows her. She doesn’t understand his terrifying yet attractive look, or her longing. But even as the mystery deepens Hannah is sure of one thing. A sea change is coming.
This wonderful mystery and romantic fiction novel is sure to bring many people’s imaginations to life. The detailed writing paints a picture in my mind while in other times it plays a movie in my head. At first it may seem a bit intimidating to abandon the book. But as you read a bit more you will find that you just can’t put the book down. Who is Hannah and how does the guest know who she is? She’s just a scullery girl, right?
