Jewish Federation of Winnipeg Opens African Famine Relief Fund

For Immediate Release

July 25, 2011 – The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg is accepting donations to assist victims of the famine in Somalia and surrounding regions.

Federations across Canada are working with Isra AID which is a coordinating body of over 35 Israeli and Jewish organizations based in Israel who are active in development and relief work and whose primary purpose is to help countries in distress irrespective of age, gender and religion. This coalition approach has allowed for the coordination of efforts, for sharing and leveraging of resources and for the development of a stronger voice.

Isra Aid is active in Africa and in this particular crisis will work together with the UN agencies established to deliver food and water to impacted areas, particularly to refugee camps in Kenya.

Isra AID has been active in a variety of global crises including the most recent ones in Haiti and Japan. They have played an important and instrumental role in bringing resources and expertise to areas in need. They do this work in full cooperation with local leadership and beneficiaries always with the aim of building their local capacities.

They are also involved in raising the awareness of the Israeli public regarding the needs of people in distress and their role in volunteerism and fund raising.

To donate to the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg’s African Famine Relief, please call 477-7428 or visit www.jewishwinnipeg.org to make a donation online.
