CJA CAMPAIGN IN FULL SWING!

October 6, 2011

CJA’s Super Sunday telethon and dance party on September 11th officially kicked off this year’s Annual Campaign with laughter, screams of delight, displays of generosity and a general feeling of pride in our community’s accomplishments.

Fifty guests attended the Top Donors’ Opening Event on September 19th at the home of Carol and Neil Duboff to hear the Federation’s annual update and meet Dr. Catherine Chatterley, Director of the Canadian Institute for the Study of Anti-Semitism. Dr. Chatterley presented the group with information on the pervasive state of Anti-Semitism, particularly in the Muslim world.

“The big news is our success in growing the size of our community. We are nearly 25% larger than 10 years ago,” stated Howard Morry, CJA Campaign Co-Chair. “That growth has put pressure on our partner agencies, and we need to increase the overall CJA campaign by about $2.5 million over the next few years to meet the needs of Winnipeggers who want to participate in Jewish life.”

Jewish Federation of Winnipeg President Ben Cohen put it more bluntly. “Gray Academy of Jewish Education is bursting. There are hundreds of children on the waiting list for daycare spots at the Rady JCC. Our summer camps were packed. This is great news, and we need to do our part with our campaign donations to support our agencies.”

The Women’s Philanthropy and Lion of Judah opening events featured former Winnipegger Karen Morton, who now lives in Toronto and is a very active philanthropist and fundraiser, as keynote speaker. Her message of women’s empowerment inspired the 120 women in attendance at both events to make a personal difference.

As of September 28th, the overall campaign has reached $$2,590,058, ahead of last year by 6.5%.Women’s Philanthropy has yielded $495,138, J-PEG (25-45) has raised $83,417 and first-time donors have contributed $30,315.
