[A byelection will be held Nov 26 for School trustee as a result of Joyce Bateman vacating her seat as when she was elected to be the Conservative MP for Winnipeg South]
As a son of two teachers, I have always been inspired by the dedication, passion, joy and pride that my parents have as Manitoban teachers. Working for wonderful educational programs such as CSI, Career Trek and the Global Welcome Center have also helped inspire me to be active in my community and to fight for better public education services in Winnipeg.
My personal mission is to find new ways to reach out to parents and students, so that schools act as the heart of the community, where learning is fun and personal growth is fostered. I want our schools to be institutions that keep students safe and provide equality and fairness to all of our children. I want more opportunities for family involvement in educational programming. I want to look for ways to engage the business leaders of our community to strengthen partnerships with our schools. Above all, I want our school system to be a model for all others in Canada - and I believe it can.
With continued, strong leadership, the Winnipeg School Division can become a model for success. No other Manitoban school divisions face the same challenges, and to the same degree as the WSD. By dealing proactively with the issues that affect learning in our division such as poverty, student safety, the diversity of culture and language of our students, and access to post-secondary education, the WSD can continue to build a reputation of excellence and help attract young families to the inner city.
