JEWISH BLOOD DONORS NEEDED ON FEB 4 AT CAMPUS TO “MATCH” TWO JEWS NEEDING TRANSFUSIONS

By Jon Waldman

The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, the Gray Academy of Jewish Education and Jewish Child and Family Service present two opportunities for Winnipeggers to “Save One, Save the World” this coming Thursday

In conjunction with Canadian Blood Services and OneMatch, Federation, Gray Academy and JCFS will conduct a dual blood donor and stem cell registry clinic, which is open to the public from 12:00 to 2:30pm and 4:00 to 6:00pm on February 4th.

The dual campaign is to help both Winnipeg community members, as well as two Jewish citizens living outside the city who are in desperate need of transfusions: Shari Silverman and Eli Tovbeyn

Shari is a 34 year old mother, diagnosed with AML in June 2009. With no match within her family, Shari's best hope is to find a match within the community.

Eli is a 33 year old man. In May 2009 he was diagnosed having acute Leukemia – AML. Eli’s only chance for survival is to undergo a stem cell transplant

The clinic, which has become a semi-annual event for Federation, will take place in the gymnasium at the Asper Jewish Community Campus, 123 Doncaster Street.

People wishing to donate to the blood donor clinic are asked to call 1-888-2-donate to register in advance, while stem cell registry participants can come on a drop-in basis.
