National Council of Jewish Women of Canada, Winnipeg Section held its annual general meeting on Wednesday, December 7. Along with the usual business of an annual report, financial statement, and installation of officers and board, a service recognition award was givien to Penny Kalef. Penny Kalef joined NCJW over 58 yers ago. Penny has been a dedicated card seller for over 30 years. She ha canvassed for CJA and was a volunteer reader for CNIB.
Rose Aziman, who has been the president for 3 years, was discharged by Dianne glass, who is the immediate past president of National Council of Jewish Women of Canada. She thanked Rose for her dedication and commitment to Winnipeg Section.
Michelle Glass and Cindy Lazar were installed as the new incoming co-presidents of Winnipeg Section.
Michelle is a community pharmacist at her family run pharmacy for the last 8 years. She served as a board of director on the Manitoba Society of Pharmacists from 2005-2011. She is a volunteer presenter with osteoporosis Canada Manitoba Chapter and also screens patients in the community for fracture risk at the pharmacy level. She volunteered with Chai Folk Ensemble as a dancer for 7 years. Michelle has served on the board of National Council of Jewish Women of Canada, Winnipeg Section since 2008. Michelle is married to Roni Estein and they have two little girls Miriam and Gabrielle.
Cindy Lazar is a lawyer at Taylor McCaffrey, LLP, practicing in Labour and Employment law. Cindy has taught Labour and Employment Law at Asper School of business (U of M) for 9 semesters. Previously she was on boards of Winnipeg Jewish Community Council, Shalom Residences, B’Nai Brith league for Human Rights (Winnipeg), Co-Chair of Young leadership Division of Hebrew University (Winnipeg), Co-Chair of young Leadership Division of Hebrew University (Winnipeg Chapter). She also co-chaired NCJW’s Women’s Cancer program and has been Winnipeg Section’s Captain for the CIBC Run for the Cure. She is married to Joel Kay and they have 2 small children Rachel, 4 and Jack, 21 months.
Both Cindy and Michelle bring enthusiasm and excitement about the future of National council of Jewish Women. Winnipeg Section recently hosted citizenship court, is collecting books for “Books for Kids” project for an inner city school, planning shalach manot baskets for Jewish Child and Family Service, and an education program on osteoporosis in March. For further information, please call the Council office.
