Camp Massad - Changing Lives for 60 Summers

Sophie Yoot, January 6, 2012

Once again, winter is proving to be a very busy time for Camp Massad, North America’s only Hebrew immersion residential summer camp.

On-line registration for the summer of 2012 has just begun – with the promise of a $200 discount for those who register before February 13 – and the annual camper reunion is just around the corner, scheduled from 4:30-6:30 on Sunday, January 29 at the Asper Jewish Community Campus.

Planning also is well underway for Massad’s ‘back by popular demand’ Family Camp, Day Camp, and its 60th anniversary on-site alumni reunion at the end of the summer.

All of which attests to the fact that six decades after Massad’s founding in Manitoba’s Interlake, it remains a thriving and integral force within Winnipeg’s Jewish community and among Jewish youth from across Canada and the USA.

Massad’s success and popularity all these years is due to a number of factors that make it unique among Jewish summer camps.

The first of these is the fact that every song, shtick, sport, announcement, activity and program at Massad is conducted in Hebrew. At the same time, each summer many campers without any knowledge of Hebrew attend Massad and participate fully in all aspects of camp, becoming comfortable and proficient in Hebrew in the process.

Secondly, Massad offers numerous creative, interactive and multi-age programs that simply are not found at any other camp. It also prides itself on the fact that it has programs for all campers, no matter their age, every single evening, and every single session. Massad campers are never bored.

Thirdly, Massad is world renowned for its tremendous ruach – a spirit and joyfulness that abounds at the camp at all times among all campers and staff.  Jewish life and culture are celebrated in every moment at Massad, and everything that happens at Massad, indoors and out, from dawn to dusk, is celebrated in a song, a cheer or a chant.

Finally, and most importantly, every counselor at Massad knows and looks out for every single camper on site, and every single camper at Massad is made to feel part of a loving and nurturing family and community.

“What is so special about Camp Massad is that so many kinds of children with varied differences and personalities are drawn to it - for its ruach, its programming and most importantly for the community they feel at camp,” says Samara Carroll, Massad Programming Director.

“At Massad we are able to create a community in which every person feels safe, nurtured and loved.”

Carroll will be joined on site this summer by Executive Director Danial Sprintz, and a carefully handpicked counselor and programming staff determined to give every camper a unique and memorable experience.

“We change lives at Camp Massad,” Carroll says. “Every camper at Massad is embraced and given the tools to shine in whatever it is they love to do. That is the beauty of Massad. “
