Yude Henteleff

HENTELEFF TRIBUTE GENERATES NEW SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR LAW STUDENTS

The Winnipeg Chapter of the Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University is honouring long-time volunteer Yude Henteleff, C.M., Q.C., LL.D (Hon), at a cocktail reception at the Fort Garry Hotel on April 30th, when Henteleff will receive the prestigious Bronfman Award for Meritorious Service in recognition on his 40 year commitment to the Hebrew University. This tribute evening will feature both renowned architect and museum designer Ralph Appelbaum, who is designing the Canadian Museum of Human Rights galleries and displays, and local jazz great Ron Paley and his jazz trio.
“The creation of a scholarship fund in Yude’s name was established for friends and colleagues who would like to acknowledge his receiving the Bronfman Award, and the obvious fit was with the new Mishpatim course offered by Hebrew University for Manitoba law students,” explained Winnipeg Chapter President Faith Kaplan.
Honourary Co Chair Gail Asper adds, “Yude’s career has been focused on human rights, the environment and democracy. We couldn’t have found a more perfect fit if we had created a program from scratch.”
“The course was created when Bryan Schwartz developed the Mishpatim Program last year. It was so well received that it is being offered again this year. Twenty-two law students and two business students from U of M will leave for Jerusalem just after the tribute evening,” reports Honourary Co Chair Dee Buchwald.
Mishpatim, Hebrew for Law, includes several field trips, allowing students to experience the workings of the Israeli legal system first-hand, and includes guest lectures by some of Israel’s most prominent legal scholars as well as advocates working to promote democracy and human rights.
Dr. Bryan Schwartz, Asper Professor of International Business and Trade Law, is justifiably proud of the Mishpatim Program he helped create. “Everything that happens in Canada happens in Israel, often with the added benefit of complexity and intensity. The course encourages students to see their own legal system and society in the fresh light of experience in a world that has both remarkable similarities and contrasts. We aimed to provide a panoramic perspective; constitutional development, individual and minority rights, the criminal and family law systems, trade and business law. The Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University can be proud of supporting a pioneering program that was a remarkably success. Given the incredible cultural and scientific nature of Israel, more programs like this could be developed in many disciplines to include students from around the world.”
Ofer Shinar, Academic Coordinator at the Hebrew University explains, “The program attempted to provide the students with several distinctive perspectives on Israel as a state and a society, focusing on the interactions between law and government, human rights and democracy. I’m grateful for the assistance of the Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University and for the initiative undertaken by Prof. Bryan Schwartz, without whom this program would not have taken place.”
When reviewing students’ comments from last year, it was clear the experience resonated with everyone. The group was representative of Manitoba’s cultural mosaic, and each student experienced Israel differently. But all agreed that the experience was life changing, and the opportunity of a lifetime, for which they were grateful. Word must have spread throughout Robson Hall Law School and the I.H. Asper School of Business because this year’s course filled up on the first day of registration.
Contributions to the Yude Henteleff Mishpatim Scholarship Fund, or tickets for the tribute evening, can be made by contacting Sharon Zalik, Executive Director of the Winnipeg CFHU office at 942-3085 or [email protected]. Tax receipts will be provided.
