Rabbi Liz served as the cantor at Temple Emanu-El in Toronto from 1986-1989. Deeply committed to social justice and community building, Rabbi Liz helped launch several projects in the Toronto Jewish community, including Kol Nashim, a performing ensemble of women cantors that received widespread national exposure after its debut in 1989, and The Chai Project, promoting awareness and education on the subject of AIDS in the Jewish community.
One of the first Canadian women to be ordained as a rabbi, Rabbi Liz attended seminary at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia and was ordained in 1996. During her studies at seminary, she was awarded the Evelyn Mehlman Prize in Jewish Music each year, and, upon graduation, joined the RRC’s faculty, where she served as adjunct instructor of Chazzanut (traditional liturgical chant).
Rabbi Liz served Director of Music and Liturgy for the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation 1999-2004, and her voice can be heard on recordings linked to the JRF songbook Shirim Uvrahot: Nashir Unevareh, as well as the denomination’s Sabbath and Festival prayer book Kol Haneshamah: Shabbat Vehagim. She has continued to serve her community as a pulpit rabbi, and most recently was the first full time rabbi for Congregation Beit Tikvah in Baltimore, Maryland from 1999 through January of this year; she remains Rabbi Emerita. Rabbi Liz will be our Cantor for all High Holy Day services, including our family services on the second day of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur afternoon Rabbi Liz will be our Cantor for all High Holy Day services, including our family services on the second day of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur afternoon.
