John Orlikow, WInnipeg City Councillor

Orlikow Eager to Get Ball Rolling on Winnipeg’s Bid to Host 2017 Canada Games

press release March 17, 2013

Winnipeg, MB– John Orlikow, Councillor for River Heights - Fort Garry is throwing his support

behind Winnipeg’s bid to host the 2017 Canada Games, Canada’s largest multi-sport event.

When it comes to the benefits of the Canada Games, which is the country’s largest multi-sport

event, Orlikow speaks from experience. He represented Manitoba at four Canada Games - in

speed skating, cycling and rowing, and several other members of his family also attended many

Canada Games

“Hosting the 2017 Canada Games are an opportunity for Winnipeg to develop and build on

existing recreational and athletic facilities like the Pan Am and the Waverley Soccer Complex,

and to show off the city at its best to young athletes and people from all across Canada,” said

Orlikow. “Winnipeg has shown that we can do a great job of putting on events like this, and I’m

confident we can deliver a proposal that exceeds the Games requirements.”

He said that a successful bid will provide Winnipeg with a legacy of top-notch sports

infrastructure for the future, and athletes from Team Manitoba will get a taste of national

competition, which is a critical to the development of Olympic potential.

“Athletes from Team Manitoba and the other Provinces and Territories experience the next

level of competition which is critical to the development of our Olympic Athletes,” said Orlikow,

“But it’s also an event that brings Canadians together. I’m happy to support it.”
