B'nai Brith 2012 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents Shows Decrease of Antisemtiic Incidents in Manitoba in 2012

May 2, 2013

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY MANITOBA

The League for Human Rights of B'nai Brith Canada has monitored and reported on hate-motivated incidents directed at the Jewish community in Canada for thirty one years. This annual Audit of Antisemitic Incidents provides an examination of racism and bigotry in this country, as expressed in attacks of harassment, vandalism or violence against individual Jews or the community's institutions. It is cited by Statistics Canada, government and research agencies, and authoritative sources around the world and is the single most credible study of the phenomenon of antisemitism and patterns of occurrence and prejudice in Canada.

Manitoba in 2012
In Manitoba, there were 56 reported cases during 2012, compared to 78 in 2011 and 60 in 2010. The 2012 figure represents decrease of 28% over the 2011 findings. Despite this, it illustrates a continuing targeting of the Jewish community. The 2012 Manitoba incidents represent 4.2% of the country’s total 1345 cases.

The incidents are documented in the following categories:
39 cases of harassment

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) reported that it had responded to complaints of antisemitism in 2012, four  of them were hate- motivated activity targeting Jewish and one additional case is under investigation and remains unsolved.
