A Celebration Yiddish Culture - The 5th Mameloshen Festival

Presented by The Rady JCC and the I.L. Peretz Folk School Endowment Fund

For Immediate Release, May 23, 2013

The Rady Jewish Community Centre and the The I.L. Peretz Folk School Endowment Fund are proud and excited to announce that the 5th Mameloshen: Festival of Yiddish Entertainment and Culture will be held at the Muriel Richardson Auditorium located in the Winnipeg Art Gallery in June 2013.

"The Rady JCC is thrilled to present the 5th Mameloshen Festival along with the I.L. Peretz Folk School Endowment. The Mameloshen Festival is a unique opportunity for the Rady JCC to showcase the vibrancy and beauty of Yiddish performing arts" noted Tamar Barr, Assistant Executive Director of the Rady JCC.

The Festival opens on Wednesday June 12 with Soul to Soul: Yiddish and African - American Music Meet in Celebration of Two Cultures. This concert is conceived by Zalmen Mlotek the internationally recognized authority on Yiddish folk and theatre music, and New York’s National Yiddish Theatre’s Artistic Director since 1998. The concert is headlined by Elmore James, a veteran of five Broadway productions and numerous opera stages around the world, Tony Perry, a commanding young singer-actor, and Lisa Fishman, Yiddish singing sensation. English translation super titles will accompany all Yiddish songs

The Mameloshen Festival takes great pride in highlighting the talent and accomplishments of performers with Winnipeg roots.  On Wednesday, June 19, A Bisele Haimeshe Yiddish – A Little Homespun Yiddish will showcase some of the best contributions to Yiddish culture in Winnipeg. We are delighted to announce that Allan Blye will be joining the playbill at Mameloshen for the first time. This well-known former Winnipegger has had a long-standing career as a broadcaster, entertainer and producer. Back by popular demand, the Gray Academy of Jewish Education Yiddish Choir will be sure to dazzle the audience for their fifth appearance at Mameloshen.

As an amazing finale to the 2013 Festival, Mameloshen is pleased to present Finjan for their 30th Anniversary Reunion Concert on Tuesday, June 25. Canada's first and original Klezmer group Finjan is about to start celebrating their 31st year making music. The three times Juno Award nominated band and Western Canadian Music Award winners are performing in their hometown of Winnipeg for Mameloshen this June. Finjan will feature g Myron Schultz (clarinet), Victor Schultz (violin), Shayla Fink (accordion, voice), Kinsey Posen (bass, voice), Sasha Boychuk (clarinet) and Daniel Koulack (guitar, mandolin, banjo).

“The Rady JCC is pleased to be working with the I.L. Peretz Folk School Endowment Trust in presenting again this wonderful series which plays an integral role in preserving the place that Yiddish has in our community” said Tamar Barr, Rady JCC Assistant Executive Director and co-producer of the Festival.
