MORLEY RYPP RECEIVES QUEEN'S DIAMOND JUBILEE

by Rhonda Prepes, June 20, 2013

Member of Parliament Joyce Bateman  recently presented Morley Rypp with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal at an ceremony at Piazza De Nardi.

As Bateman stated on presenting him with the medal, “Mr. Rypp is recognized for his outstanding contributions to his community as a celebrated member of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and retired business leader who is highly regarded by his community. His passion and dedication is truly inspiring.”

Rypp was prominent in the business community as a pharmacist and pharmacy owner for about 40 years. In 1984 he was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and in 1995 into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame for being on the 1950 and 1951 Canadian Junior Champions Winnipeg Stellars basketball teams. He has been an avid volunteer for the last 20 years with organizations such as, the Winnipeg Music Festival, the Jazz Festival, the Fringe Festival, and the International Writer’s Festival.

Morley told the WJR, “I was not expecting this award at all. At my age, it was the furthest thing on my mind. But my whole family and I are overjoyed that I did receive this remarkable honour.”

Larry Ried of Empire Financial remembers Rypp’s kindness, when Ried as a child was six years old and didn’t have a costume for Halloween. Rypp, who was then a pharmacist gave him one.

Nowadays, Rypp likes to hang out at the Rady JCC.

He has two children, Howard Rypp, who has a Tel-Aviv based Nepesh Theatre, and a daughter Robin Rypp married to Arnie Usiskin. Morley’s granddaughter Jacqui Usiskin recently won the gold Medal in Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba
