Larry and Tova Vickar Endow their Combined Jewish Appeal Gift

Jewish Foundation of Manitoba fund allows donors to support the CJA in perpetuity

November 4, 2013

The Combined Jewish Appeal and the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba are pleased to announce that long-time community leaders and philanthropists, Larry and Tova Vickar, have reached a milestone in their “Leave More Than Memories” fund – a milestone that will allow their annual CJA campaign gift to live on forever.

Interest earned by the fund, held at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, is distributed annually to the Combined Jewish Appeal campaign.

“Tova and I have been building this fund for 10 years and our goal has always been to reach a level – in our lifetime – where the annual distribution of the fund would reflect our CJA gift,” says Larry Vickar. “The fund allows us to support the Combined Jewish Appeal forever. We care deeply about our Jewish community and the endowment allows us to demonstrate our commitment.”

The Vickars, through years of generous giving and volunteer work in the community, have developed strong confidence in the community’s infrastructure together with a feeling of optimism for the future.

“We have always been impressed by how the Jewish Federation uses the funds they raise through the CJA,” says Larry, a former CJA Campaign Chair and current Top Donors Division Co-Chair. “The annual allocations process is thoughtful and well-managed, and leads to a clear understanding of the community’s priorities.”

“As for the Foundation, it has a long history of managing funds responsibly and professionally,” adds Larry, who currently sits on the Foundation’s Executive Committee. “And it, too, has a clear understanding of what makes our Jewish community work. We’re lucky that our Foundation and our Federation work well together. The community is in good hands.”

Tova and Larry also believe that endowing their campaign gift is a remarkable way to express to their children what is important to them. “Our sons, Sam and Stephen, are very supportive of our decision to endow our CJA gift,” says Larry. “They are both generous men who speak for themselves as contributors. Our endowment allows Tova and I to continue to speak for ourselves even after we’re gone.”

Tova and Larry Vickar encourage CJA donors at all levels to consider endowing an annual CJA campaign gift through the Leave More Than Memories Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. “Before we were born, others built this community. Endowments are one of the methods that allow our generation to ensure the community’s success in the future.”
