Holocaust Awareness Week: April 27- May 1, 2014

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, April 23, 2014

We Remember our Past. We Trust in the Future.

(April, 2014) - Yom Hashoah/Holocaust Memorial Day falls on the 27th of Nisan, midway between the anniversary of the beginning of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and Yom Ha'atzmaut.

This year, we will commemorate Yom Hashoah on Monday, April 28th during The Annual Public Holocaust Commemoration Program at 12:00 noon at the Holocaust Monument on the grounds of the provincial legislature. The program features: the Premier’s Proclamation of Yom Hashoah; greetings from the federal government delivered by Joyce Bateman, MP Winnipeg South Centre; and greetings from the City of Winnipeg by Mayor Sam Katz. This year’s program includes students from 2 public schools, Gray Academy, as well as a number of singing ensembles. Rabbis, community dignitaries, members of the legislature, Holocaust survivors, and several hundred members of the community will commemorate Yom Hashoah together at the Monument. Please remember to dress appropriately for this outdoor program.

The program will be preceded by B’nai Brith Canada’s “Unto Every Person There is a Name” at 9:30 a.m. in Room 254 at the Manitoba Legislative Building.

The Annual Holocaust Memorial Service for survivors, their families and members of the public will begin Holocaust Awareness Week at Congregation Etz Chayim, 123 Matheson Ave. E., on Sunday, April 27th at 11:00 a.m. Stuart Murray, Executive Director and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Human Rights will be our keynote speaker. On Sunday evening, the 7th Annual Yom Hashoah Commemorative Service and Reading of the Megillat Hashoah will take place at 7:00 p.m. at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 561 Wellington Cr. This is a poignant, liturgical interfaith service.

On Monday evening, UJPO/Sholem Aleichem Community presents their Warsaw Ghetto Memorial Program with guest speaker Dr. Catherine Chatterley talking about “The Museum for the History of Polish Jews”. The program will take place at Congregation Etz Chayim, 123 Matheson Ave. E. at 7:30 p.m. along with the special North End Jewish Folk Choir.

On Tuesday, April 29th the Stay Young Club of the Rady JCC will host a Holocaust Program at 11:15 a.m. in the Adult Lounge featuring a presentation on the rescue of Jews by the Philippines.

On Thursday, May 1st the Jewish Child and Family Service lunch program for Holocaust survivors will take place at the Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre, 1588 Main St. at 12:15 p.m. and will honour Teunis Sherpenzeel, a righteous Gentile from the Netherlands.
