ALAN LEVY: IN RESPONSE TO THE KIDNAPPING OF YIFRACH, FRENKEL AND SHA'AR, ISRAEL SHOULD ENACT THE GOLDA SOLUTION

by Alan Levy, July 3, 2014

In response to the 1972 Munich murders at the Olympic Games, the response of Golda Meir, then Israel's Prime Minister was that for as long as it takes, Israel must pursue and kill each one involved in perpetrating the murders. The last terrorist responsible for the 1972 Munich murders was killed in 1992, some twenty years later. I suggest that in regard to the three boys that Hamas recently murdered, Israel go after all involved, including the Hamas leadership. Never should they be able to sleep comfortably. Taking too harsh an action that will result in incidental deaths on either side is not the best strategy towards the road to Peace. But targeting each terrorist and each leader of Hamas is very appropriate I suggest.

There is no military solution between us and the Palestinians, and that is why we must show the world we are not like the terrorists who murder innocent children. We must have negotiated peace someday. This must be kept in mind, even though peace currently seems far away.

A child is a child, Arab or Jewish. But it’s time we destroy the Hamas leadership now in charge of Gaza, where ever they may run for as long as it takes. I know of what I speak. In 1974 doing community work in Northern Israel at the tender age of 18 we were sent to a place where terrorists killed Israeli children. When I first saw their lifeless little bodies I cried uncontrollably. Growing up in North Winnipeg did not prepare me for such madness, and then I was very sick to my stomach for days. I felt such hate towards the people that had needlessly murdered these beautiful little ones.  Our first human response is not the correct response in this current situation---hate is useless in such matters. Of course it is too easy to fall prey to the feeling of hate towards those who murder innocent children. We must, however, try to do our best to resist the temptation of such feelings. As difficult as that is.

The Palestinian Leader Mr. Abbas has in Arabic condemned the actions of kidnapping and murder of these children and assisted in the search for these teenagers. This is a positive move but the West Bank leader cannot be half pregnant-- that is he cannot condemn the actions of Hamas and then be in a political partnership with Hamas. However, Israel must be careful not to destroy the relationship they have, as delicate as it is, with the West Bank leadership.

As a mediator I know there are important incidents of the history of this terrible dispute between all the parties. This is one such event in this history of Israel. But Hamas must understand their actions are beyond the rules of the game of War. Hamas seems to be acting on the strategy of willful blindness. They know that their behavior is beyond the pale. Yet they refuse to see reality for what it is--They cannot obtain success whatever that means to them, by murdering innocent children.

The father of the realist theory of international relations, Professor Hans Morgenthau, Henry Kissinger's Professor, consistently argued that international politics is governed by the competitive and conflict ridden nature of humankind. Morgenthau saw many aspects of the nuclear arms race and war in general as a form of irrational madness which required the utmost attention of responsible diplomats, and scholars. Thus if the Palestinians want peace they must understand that at some time in the future only dialogue will lead to peace, not murdering our innocent children. We must be clear murdering children - Arab or Jewish is absolutely reprehensible! The biblical notion of an eye for an eye will only lead to more senseless violence.

The Golda solution is measured and will allow current and future leaders of Hamas to know that if you murder our children your life will be in great danger and we will not stop until we act accordingly!
