Camp Massad Breaks Ground For New Major Renovations

by former Massadnik Rhonda Spivak. December 9, 2014

Hackshevoo Hackshevoo, extensive renovations to Camp Massad's site at Sandy Hook are about to begin ! No more swamps and murky puddles on the shetach (ground) of Massad!

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on November 18, 2014 to mark the beginning of renovations which are the result of the ambitious revitalization program for Camp Massad.  The camp marked its 60th anniversary by launching a major capital campaign with a goal of 1 million dollars, ably co-chaired by  Ivy Kopstein and Laurel Malkin

As Kopstein wrote to the Winnipeg Jewish Review, "We are just thrilled that the renovations to the site are under way! By next summer, campers will enjoy drier grounds and more functional programming spaces indoors and out.  The iconic Chadar Ochel will be upgraded - thanks to the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba and The Asper Foundation. An existing cabin will be reconfigured and renovated, thanks to the Tapper Family Fund in memory of Richard Tapper."

She added, "We are grateful to all of our donors to date, who helped us gain the momentum  to a successful campaign! We are hoping that others will take this opportunity before the end of the year to help us reach our 1 million dollar goal! Only $170,000 to go"

Here are a few of the improvements  that we can look forward to seeing on the site

Improved drainage

Landscaping and leveling of the site

Remodeling and modernization of the cabins

Renovation of the Chadar Ochel (Dining Hall) -both the interior and exterior

Creation of New Program spaces

Building of walkways, planting of trees, and improvement of the parking lot

Creation of a bus loop , and also a service entrance

Provision of better accessibility for all

Anyone who would like to help the camp reach its goal can call Daniel Sprintz at the Camp Massad office 204 477 7487 for further information
