Among the Algemeiner’s Top 100 People Positively Influencing Jewish Life is this year’s Shindleman Lecturer, Professor Jeffrey Herf.

Professor Herf is an award-winning historian of twentieth century Germany, and an expert on Nazi Germany's antisemitic propaganda, who helped pioneer the new scholarly focus on the relationship between Adolf Hitler and the Mufti of Jerusalem, and the goal of spreading Nazi antisemitism into North Africa and the Middle East.

Herf has taken a firm stand against the ongoing campaign among academic organizations to isolate Israel, and was a vocal opponent of attempts to promote Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) in the American Historical Association, which still has not voted in favor of any anti-Israel resolutions.

“One reason for opposition to these resolutions lay in a general opposition to the politicization of a scholarly organization,” Herf stated, adding, “Yet as an organization of historians, some of us felt compelled to address the factual accuracy of the accusations contained in the resolution. We argued that it was essential that a profession devoted to seeking the truth about the past should devote careful attention to fact and evidence.”

Professor Herf will be delivering CISA’s 2016 Shindleman Lecture at the Hotel Fort Garry on Monday, May 30, 2016 at 7:30 pm.

His lecture will focus on the relationship between Islamist movements and the Radical Left after 1967, and the impact of this relationship on Israel, which is the subject of his new book by Cambridge University Press.

CISA will host a book sale and signing, with refreshments, after the lecture. Seating will be limited.
