Heartwarming Comedy Opens Winnipeg Jewish Theatre’s 29th Season

October 6, 2016

Winnipeg Jewish Theatre opens its 29th season with the Canadian premiere of Anna Ziegler’s uplifting play about family dynamics, Another Way Home.

Called a “fair minded and philosophical” playwright by the New York Times, Ms Ziegler’s work, appearing for the first time in Winnipeg at WJT, intertwines beauty, humour, and sadness to create bittersweet and relatable situations onstage. Of Another Way Home, San Francisco’s Mercury News says, “The playwright etches this family with tenderness but also with bracing honesty… it’s hard not to see yourself in all of the characters on stage at one moment or another.” Another Way Home introduces audiences to the Nadelman family: Lillian, Phillip, their son Joey, and their daughter Nora. They bicker and kvetch like all families do. During visiting day at Camp Kickapoo, a family argument escalates and Joey runs away. As Lillian and Phillip search for their son, they are forced to re-evaluate what matters most to them. This insightful play examines the challenges and triumphs of being a parent, a spouse, a sibling, and somebody’s child – in short, what it means to be a family.

Another Way Home will feature real life mother and daughter Mariam Bernstein and Miranda Baran as onstage mother and daughter Lillian and Nora. The all-local cast is rounded out by Cory Wojcik (Phillip), Tristan Carlucci (Joey), and Darren Martens (camp counselor Mike T). This production also features the work of set designer Linda Beech, lighting designer Randy Harder, and stage manager Ali Fulmyk. Another Way Home is directed by WJT’s Artistic Director Ari Weinberg. Miranda Baran says of performing with her mother, acclaimed local actor and director Mariam Bernstein, “It’s been a dream of mine since I was really little. I’ve always loved coming in to work with her and now that we’re officially doing it together I’m just walking on air. Very thankful, very honoured, very excited… a lot of my “process” is inspired by the way I watched her work.”

Tickets for Another Way Home begin at $25.00. For show times and ticket information, visit www.wjt.ca, or call 204-477-7515. All shows take place at the Berney Theatre, located inside the Asper Jewish Community Campus, at 123 Doncaster Street.
