POEMS WRITTEN TO REFLECT ON MARCH OF THE LIVING: CREATION,HORROR, PRAYER

by Sadie Silverstein, age 18, University of Winnipeg

Another Great Creation

Another day, another tune
Another song to sing
Another friend, a happy end
The joy one life can bring

Another day, another love
An everlasting life
A tender kiss, the wedded bliss
Of husband and of wife

Another day, another birth
A little girl or boy
A couple's kin, its velvet skin
A parent's pride and joy

Another day, another test
A path down which to turn
An unsure sense, a consequence
A lesson yet to learn

Another day, another wrong
Another broken smile
Another fight, to make it right
A time to reconcile

Another day, another grave
Another time to die
Another cost, a loved one lost
Another said goodbye

Another day, another life
A new reincarnation
Another birth, another worth
Another. Great. Creation.

Holocaust Horror

A time of disappointment
A time of great despair
A time of death and horror
Their ashes fill the air

A blackened sky of souls
The innocent shall pay
6,000,000 Jews were murdered
We remember to this day

It started with a box car
Like cattle we were shipped
Hypnotized by Hitler's reign
Our dignity was stripped

Families were torn apart
Valuables were stolen
Nazi soldiers took what was
A bright and thriving Poland

How long before this madness ends
I weigh but 60 lbs
A Nazi armed at each square inch
I jump at every sound

Surrounded in the barracks
By the beaten and the dead
I worry should that be my fate
The dawn is what I dread

If some of us were lucky
Our suffer would not last
For those of us who were
Like vermin they were gassed

Tremendous torture we've endured
Like no one's ever seen
Not one can understand until
They've been where we have been

A Prayer

And let His tears rid the blood
That stained His holy trees
For He is one, His deed is done
He listened to our pleas

And let Him hear our voices
As we raise them to His throne
For He is brave, it's He who saved
The Jews such like my own

And let us learn His ways
And drop our swords and spears
To free the dead, and all the dread
That's haunted us for years

And let us die in peace
And live a life without regret
For those who died, and those who cried
I'll be damned should i forget

War forever more

The blood upon a soldier's hands
Unsightly guts and gore
Malicious will, a wish to kill
And war forever more

The weapons and machinery
The engine's vicious roar
Metallic drill, a sound so shrill
And war forever more

Lifeless bodies shroud the earth
Yet all seem to ignore
A fight to thrill, a night to chill
And war forever more

The aviator army planes
Through dark gray skies they soar
Soldiers armed, opponent harmed
And war forever more

A battlefield of tragedy
A sight like none before
The blood to spill, a heart beats still
And war forever more

A feeling brewing in the air
Feet planted to the floor
I'm standing still, I stand until
The war shall live no more

A ray of light between the clouds
The waves upon the shore
The battle's won, the war is done
And war shall live no more
