For Immediate Release: Bulrushes Gallery Celebrates Canada Printmakers

June 8, 2017

To commemorate Canada’s 150 years Bulrushes Gallery is celebrating contemporary printmaking in Canada.  Bulrushes Gallery, located in a picturesque park like setting  just 3 Km west of Winnipeg Beach, has a tremendous selection of fine art representing all mediums and styles. The gallery is particularly proud of its collection of fine Canadian original prints.  According to Tim Wall, gallery curator, it is not unusual for people to confuse original prints with mass produced art reproductions.  Printmaking is its own art form, one that is highly technical, complicated and that produces beautiful original works of art. These are not reproductions or copies of an original work of art, rather each one is an original work of art in its own right. An original print is a multiple produced art work from an image the artist has created directly onto a printing plate. This image does not exist in any other form.”

In the mid-1950’s after rediscovering the many challenges, possibilities and versatility of prints, printmaking in Canada began to receive public acclaim and interest. International print exhibitions flourished and Canadians were among the most celebrated. Nationally recognized Canadian painters began devoting their attention to printmaking , some abandoning their traditional mediums and methods of creating art to adopting the printmaking process as their sole source of expression. Starting in Montreal, printmaking moved to Toronto and then gradually found its way out west.  In the 1960’s commercial galleries in Montreal and Toronto began specializing in prints.

Wall went on to say “never underestimate the power and value of a good original print. Some of the worlds most recognized and important artists used printmaking processes starting with Rembrandt, and including the likes of Picasso, Dali, and Warhol. Canada has no shortage of incredible and important printmakers, many of whom have works represented in our collection.” Wall added that Canadian printmakers have made profound contributions in promoting Canadian art, culture and heritage. We enjoy helping people to learn more about this very special art form.”  Wall added “my heart sinks whenever I hear someone say, “Oh it’s only a print”.  I try to use that as an opportunity to educate people and help them to more fully appreciate that what they are looking at is an original work of art.”

This is Bulrushes Gallery’s third season. Whether you are novice or seasoned art enthusiast you are sure to be surprised and delighted by what you will find. The gallery also features works by Canadian and International artists including other original works in oil, acrylic, watercolour and mixed medium.  We will however always have a special place for our Canadian printmakers. The gallery is open Saturday and Sunday afternoons for the month of June and Friday through Sunday afternoons, July and August.
