Dov Spivak Corne and Micah Grubert Van Iderstine Get Major Scholarships From U of M and Queen's And Thank Gray Academy for Helping Them to Succeed

by Rhonda Spivak, September 1, 2017

Dov Raphael Spivak Corne, a member of the 2017 graduating class from Gray Academy of Jewish Education is the University of Manitoba 's Isabel Auld Entrance 2017/2018 Scholarship recipient. This is being awarded to him for graduating with the highest average of Manitoba high school graduates entering U of M for the 2017/2018 academic scholarship. Corne, who will be entering the Asper School of Business told the Winnipeg Jewish Review he was grateful for the educational nourishment he received at Gray Academy.  "I am grateful to my teachers at Gray Academy for providing me with such a solid educational background and I am also grateful that in addition to my regular studies, I was able to learn a full complement of Judaic studies. "

Corne's scholarship is renewable in each of the second, third and fourth years of Study at the U of M provided he achieves a sessional grade point average of at least 3.75 upon completion of each of the first, second, and third years of university study.

Lori Binder, Head of School and CEO at Gray Academy, congratulated Corne on his scholarship and noted, “Every student at Gray Academy is an individual. Our dedicated faculty challenge each student to reach their potential and find their passion in learning.”

Rhonda Spivak, Dov' s mother (who is also the writer of this article), says "I think parents with gifted children can feel confident that their child will receive more than sufficient intellectual stimulation at Gray Academy. We didn't feel that that it was necessary to look at sending Dov to other private schools in order to obtain enrichment for him. We felt he could excel at Gray and we wanted his education to be well-rounded, such that he would  learn Judaic studies, which would anchor him to his roots and forge his Jewish identity."

Micah Grubert Van Iderstine, also a member of the Gray Academy 2017 Graduating Class, who will be working towards an Honours Bachelor of Science degree received the  Queen’s Chancellor’s Scholarship, which is a four-year scholarship, considered a major admissions award by the Queen's University in Kingston Ontario.   http://www.queensu.ca/studentawards/admission-awards/major-admission-awards

Grubert Van Iderstine told the Winnipeg Jewish Review "The connections between the students and teachers at Gray Academy are unlike those at any other school. Our teachers have a genuine interest in our lives, and made sure to offer help wherever they could in order to help us succeed."

Binder went on to say, “Mazel Tov to Dov, Micah, and the many graduates who received scholarships this year. The largest graduating class in history is making its mark, and I know each and every one of them will make an impact in our community and beyond.”

Rob Dalgliesh, Director of Teaching and Learning at Gray Academy, who is responsible for curriculum development, says that Gray Academy is dedicated to creating a stimulating learning environment for all learners yet tailored to the needs of the individual student. "The class sizes that Gray is able to maintain allow for educators to know their students and adjust their pedagogy to maximize the individual’s potential while still ensuring the social engagement factor essential to a quality education. Teachers get to know the kids and formulate their lessons to stimulate their aptitudes and passions."

Dalgliesh, who has been at Gray Academy for the last two years after having been in the public system for 27 years, adds that "by individualizing the learning, teachers at Gray Academy can match kids that have similar interests and passions to maximize their learning in parings or small cohorts. Other times they can match kids with dissimilar interests which helps expose young people to the diversity of the world around them and perhaps spark a new area of curiosity."

Dalgliesh also notes that the curriculum at Gray Academy is designed "to foster values of our community and the importance of tikkun olam. By ensuring these are at the heart of what we do, we are instrumental in developing the future leaders our community."
