CEO Message May 2018 - Jewish Federation of Winnipeg

May 11, 2018

Dear Community Members,

Thank you to everyone who has joined our Leave More Than Memories (LMTM) endowment campaign with the 80 for 80 Challenge. Federation is 80 years old as an organization and our goal is to have 80 individuals establish new funds, or to increase their existing fund by increments of $80. An endowment will sustain the community forever. You can open a fund for ONLY $100.

Each year we celebrate Israel’s Independence on 5 Iyar 5708 which in 1948 was on May 14th. This year marks Israel’s 70th anniversary of independence. Over the last 70 years Israel has practiced Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, through numerous missions around the globe from Africa to Asia and South America. Israel is known for its outstanding contributions in the fields of agriculture, medicine and technology and so much more.

We are pleased to inform you that our mission to Israel has reached capacity and have a waitlist established for anyone hoping to join us this November. It will be a great way to celebrate the Federation’s 80th and Israel’s 70th. These missions introduce you to this amazing country in a unique way. Not only do you learn about its rich history, but you meet leaders in security, innovation, journalism, medicine, and politics and journey to places unavailable to tours and general travellers.

In April, Federation sent a letter to the Canadian Mennonite University voicing our strong objections to Canadian Mennonite University (CMU)’s decision to host Naim Ateek on April 25th for an event entitled The Bible, Justice, and the Palestine-Israel Conflict. Since then a meeting was held with Bernie Bellan and Belle Jarniewski with Jonathan Dueck and Terry Schellenberg at the CMU which we understand was quite positive. Federation has initiated an additional meeting to discuss further.

May is a very busy month within our Winnipeg community. We are very fortunate to have such a vibrant community with so much activity.  I would like you to pay special attention to the Federations events.  On May 14th we will welcome Canadian Ambassador to Israel, Ambassador Deborah Lyons to our city. She will be meeting with various community leaders and government. Kavod Evening takes place May 17, 7:30 pm at the Congregation Shaarey Zedek at which we will honour and celebrate our leaders and volunteers. On June  7, 7:30 pm at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Gabi Ashkenazi (Former Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), who retired in 2011 after an illustrious military career that spanned nearly 40 years. He is also former CEO of Israel’s Ministry of Defense and serves as the Chairman of the Rashi Philanthropic Foundation) "From Start –up to Cyber Nation” tickets are $18 and students are free. Purchase tickets or register online.

Welcome back to the Partnership 2Gether (P2G) delegation. 15 Grade 10 & 11 students from Gray Academy of Jewish Education had an experience of a lifetime when they spent two weeks in Israel as part of the JFW’s P2G program. This experience connects Gray Academy students with their partner school, Danciger High School, in Kiryat Shmona. They were fortunate to be able to partake in the important days of Yom Hashoah, Yom Hazikaron, and Yom Ha’atzmaut. Gray Academy students volunteered in the community, led workshops for Danciger students on life in the Diaspora, and brought Tzedakah to a variety of charitable organizations in the community.  Gray Academy will help the JFW welcome all of the participants arriving next week for the upcoming Parnership2Gether conference. Visit the Gray Academy Facebookpage for pictures from the trip.

This weekend we will host the P2G Coast to Coast Joint Steering Committeec Spring meetings during which we welcome 32 visitors from the Northern Galilean Panhandle in Israel, and across Canada.

Volunteers:

We have recently become aware that this is a tough time of year for foodbanks and as many of us may have leftover unused, unopened Passover products, why not consider donating them to the Winnipeg Harvest or the Jewish Child and Family Service.

Community Planning: Seeking volunteers to establish subcommittees in two priority areas: Strengthen Community Caring and Improve Infrastructure and Community Capacity

Education and Engagement: Seeking volunteers to establish subcommittees in the following areas: Innovate Programming; Jewish Education Review; Shabbat Engagement; Welcoming Community

Please join us for these upcoming events and programs:
