Many of you have expressed your concern with media coverage of the ongoing riots along the Israel-Gaza border, and with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent statement that called for an immediate independent investigation into Israel’s use of “excessive force and live ammunition.”

I am writing to you today to assure you that we at the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg share your concern.

Together with our advocacy partner, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), we sent a letter to CBC in protest of the anti-Israel bias demonstrated by its hosts who, in recent interviews about the Gaza border clashes, relentlessly criticized Israel while completely absolving Hamas of all responsibility for the violence and ensuing tragic deaths.

When Prime Minister Trudeau released a statement that did not mention Hamas, Jewish Federations across Canada mobilized thousands of Canadians to write to the Government of Canada to express our deep disappointment. We have also requested an urgent meeting with the Manitoba Liberal MPs and CIJA has requested a meeting with our Prime Minister to convey our community’s concerns. I will keep you informed of any outcomes that stem from that meeting.
