Fivie Gunn and Jon Hochman at Gunn's

Jon Hochman Buys Popular Gunn's Bakery-Not Looking to Change Products

by Rhonda Spivak, January 17, 2019

Jon Hochman is the new owner of the well known, popular Gunn’s Bakery , having bought the family-owned kosher bakery on Selkirk Avenue from Fivie and Bernie Gunn on Dec 30, 2018.

When asked about his decision to buy Gunn's Bakery, the 32 year old Hochman, says that the opportunity to buy Gunn's that was presented to him "was almost to good to be true." He adds, "My family has been serving and stocking our cupboards with Gunn's products for as long as I can remember. So there was an immediate feeling of nostalgia and pride involved. Gunn's is also widely popular for its quality product and consistent service as I experienced over my 15 plus years in the service industry."

As Hochman notes, "I was honoured to be approached with the idea of taking over the business mid 2017 and decided that with all of my experience and support around me it was something I wanted to do."

When asked if he will you be making any changes to Gunn's, Hochman says "My goal is to grow the business not change it. Product and staff will be just as if Bernie and Fivie are here daily."

When asked what his personal favourite Gunn's products were, Hochman replies "Applejacks have been one of my favourites, and then also kasha knishes. It's hard to label a product a favourite when everything has been as good as it is."

Jon, the son of Jerry and Arlene Hochman, has already been involved in food preparation and sales for a long time. Jon was the original proprietor of  of Sherbrook Street Delicatessen (which served Jewish-style favorites such as corned beef, salami and chopped liver) , but had left mid 2017 to pursue other ventures. The deli closed in September 2018 but has since re-opened under new management. Jon has also worked in the restaurant industry extensively since he was a teen, including being a chef at Lobby on York Restaurant and Bar. Jon has also owned a restaurant called Fitzroy serving eclectic food, and has worked as well at Tavern in the Park.

Fivie Gunn says that he'll be staying on at Gunn's "for quite a while yet." He adds "I have a lot of information to pass on, and I want to ensure that the business will be a continuing success."

Fivie adds Jon is "a very nice fellow and we get along very well. He's got a lot of energy and I am impressed with him."

When asked how the transition has been so far, Hochman responds that "?My experience so far has been incredible. I'm so grateful for the amount of support from everyone involved at the bakery. Bernie and Fivie have created such a wonderful family environment here."

He adds "Over the last year I've gotten very close with Bernie and Fivie. Although Bernie is retired I'm hoping he won't feel like a stranger."

Gunn’s was founded by Fivie and Bernie’s parents, Polish immigrants Morris and Florence Gunn in 1937 on Selkirk Avenue, in what was then the heart of the Jewish North End. In addition to baked goods, Gunns also carries kosher cheeses and meats and offers catering services for all occasions. There is free delivery for retail orders over $50.00
