Why Beit Halochem: A Message from our Negev Gala Honouree, Steven Schipper

May 9, 2019

The Jewish National Fund of Canada's Manitoba/Saskatchewan Regional Branch is thrilled to announce our 2019 Negev Gala Honouree: Mr. Steven Schipper, Artistic Director of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre.

Artistic Director of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre since 1989, Steven is an acclaimed director and artistic leader. Under his leadership and direction the Royal MTC has enhanced its reputation as one of Canada’s foremost regional theatres.

In 2010, Queen Elizabeth II honoured Manitoba Theatre Centre with a Royal designation; Royal MTC is the only theatre company in North America to have been so recognized.

Steven was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Winnipeg in 2007 and from the University of Manitoba in 2015, and was appointed to the Order of Canada and received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for his contributions to Canadian Theatre.

We hope you will join us on May 27th as we honour Mr. Steven Schipper and support Beit Halochem, a cause that is near and dear to Mr. Schipper's heart.

Dear Friends,

As you may know, I am this year’s JNF Negev Gala Honouree.  I’m humbled (and surprised!) to be chosen for this recognition. I said “Yes” because I believe wholeheartedly in the great work that JNF does, and because I’m passionate about Beit Halochem, the project the proceeds of the Gala event will be supporting.

I’ve been aware of Beit Halochem for a long time, because of the miraculous work they do in helping Israeli victims of war and terror resume productive lives. How can anyone ever repay our brave Israeli citizens for making ultimate sacrifices in service of Israel’s security? We can’t. The least we can do, and Beit Halochem does exactly this, expertly, is repair the souls of shattered lives, of soldiers and innocent civilians whose bodies have been torn apart.

So I really hope that you’ll be supportive of the JNF Gala this year, and that you’ll be able to attend on May 27 (Purchase Tickets). Comedian Elon Gold will ensure we all share some huge laughs, and thanks to your support and participation, together we’ll share our love and support for Israel.

Yours sincerely,
