Chesed Shel Emes, a vital part of our community, has historically operated from our chapel, built in 1947, and the adjacent “house” at 1023 Main Street. The house, which we acquired in 1930, has served as our mortuary, Tahara and Shmira space, and office for close to a century, but is no longer adequate to meet the needs of our community. Accordingly, it is our intention to demolish the house and build a new structure, while retaining our historic chapel. Our new facility will allow us to improve services for the public at the adjacent chapel, with a permanent ramp, additional washrooms and enhanced security. Importantly, the new building will be constructed specifically for our unique needs.
Our Chevra Kadisha, volunteers and staff will be able to safely provide dignified service to all members of our community with appropriate access, equipment and ventilation. In order to achieve our goals, Chesed Shel Emes has launched a community wide Building Campaign .Our last major fundraising effort was in the early 1940's. Over the last several months we have been working with a team of professionals from the community on many of the necessary components of the Campaign and Project - designing building plans, conducting geotechnical and other site tests, updating our technology and developing a communication strategy.
In addition to our professional team - Akman Construction, Manoverboard (communications), Republic Architecture and Campaign experts Protexia - we are fortunate to have a Campaign Leadership Team of community leaders: Michel Aziza, Ellery Broder, David Gisser, Jason Gisser, Peter Leipsic, Jeff Lieberman, Dr. Ted Lyons, Howard Morry, Mira Narvey, Hernan Popper, Elana Schultz, Larry Vickar, and Michael Weinstein. We invite you to visit our ‘house” for coffee and an informative, soulful tour and conversation which will illustrate the crucial work we do and the need for a new facility.
