CHIEF RABBI OF THE COMMONWEALTH TO SPEAK JUNE 2, 2024

April 5, 2024

Adas Yeshurun Herzlia’s Annual Distinguished Lecturer series has presented a who’s who of the Jewish world to Winnipeg over the past seven years. Dara Horn, author of People Love Dead Jews, is now an expert on “elite” antisemitism. Eminent educator Rabbi Joseph Telushkin offered a roadmap to meaningful life.  Former IDF spokeswoman Caroline Glick continues to expose anti-Israel hypocrisy online. Elijah Wiesel shared anecdotes as Eli Wiesel’s son and is a human rights activist. Dr Avivah Zornberg teaches Torah at Machon Matan for Religious Women. Shurat HaDin’s Nitsana Darshan-Leitner wages lawfare against Hamas and its enablers UNWRA and the International Red Cross on behalf of victims of terror.

In response to the horrors of October 7th Rabbi Yosef Benarroch personally invited the Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth to inspire us in finding hope as we move forward in these uncertain times.  Lord Ephraim Mirvis will join us at Adas Yeshurun Herzlia from his home in London on Sunday, June 2nd at noon.

Lord Mirvis was born into a rabbinical family in Cape Town, where he completed high school before leaving to study at yeshivot in Israel. He received his semicha from Machon Ariel in Jerusalem and holds a BA in Education and Classical Hebrew from the University of South Africa. He is the 11th Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth since the office was introduced in 1704.

His position as Chief Rabbi of Ireland from 1984 to 1992 was followed by his tenure as Senior Rabbi at Finchley United Synagogue in London in 1996. Lord Mirvis was installed as Chief Rabbi of the Commonwealth on September 1st, 2013, in an historic ceremony attended by His Majesty the King, then Prince of Wales.

Adas Yeshurun Herzlia’s modern Orthodox congregation welcomes all members of our community to enjoy traditional synagogue services and holiday celebrations, provides community Kashrut and Eruv supervision, offers children’s, youth, and adult programming, and invites you to Torah learning with Rabbi Benarroch.

For more information on sponsorship opportunities or to purchase tickets to this outstanding event contact the synagogue office by calling 204 489 6262, or by email to [email protected]
