FEDERATION WILL NEED NEW JEWISH ENGAGEMENT CO-ORDINATOR: POSEN TO BE PROGRAM DIRECTOR AT BB AND THEN OFF TO YU

by Rhonda Spivak, June 3, 2011

Avi Posen, who has been  the Jewish Federation of  Winnipeg's s Jewish Engagement Co-ordinator  since last September, will be going to take his Masters  in Jewish Education and Administration at Yeshiva University in New York  this coming  fall.

As of now, the Winnipeg Jewish Review  does not have any information as to how the Federation will be replacing  Posen--by re-shuffling the loads of existing staff or by looking to hire a new person.

Before going to Yeshiva U, Posen will  be the  Program Director of  B'nai Brith Camp on Towne Island, and will no doubt be a valuable asset to B.B.Camp.

A graduate of Gray Academy of Jewish Education, Posen has lived and studied at Hebrew University of Jerusalem for a year in 2008/2009, has taught bar and bat mitzvah lessons and torah reading, and was a co-assistant Director at Camp Massad last  summer.

Posen himself went to Camp Massad (since 1999) but he also went to  BB Camp previously for tow summers (1997 and 1998)

Posen, who graduated from the University of Winnipeg in December 2009 with a BA in Psychology was tasked with implementing Jewish engagement strategies that came out of a two year strategic review of our community.  Posen's role  was  to coordinate community wide events partnering with a variety of other organizations in order to " connect more Jews to more of Jewish life."

When asked by the  Winnipeg Jewish Review lat summer what he  thought was  the most important way to get young people Jewishly engaged, Posen responded,  that programming "needs to be relevant – you need to make the programming connect to what interests them Jewishly in life, such as Jewish summer camp, youth groups like BBYO and Israel."

This past year Posen worked on programs such as " Teen Shabbat Activities, the Global Day of Jewish Learning, Limmud Winnipeg, PJ Library programming, Shabbat Across Winnipeg, Passocer in the Aatza Aisle, Together Under One Roof, planned the second annual LOL Jewish Leadership Retreat and also worked with Shlenger on Machon Madrichim.

Prior to commencing his position as Jewish Engagement Co-ordinator , Posen worked at the Jewish Federation  of Winnipeg as director of Machon Madrichim and was a planning associate to Faye Rosenberg Cohen on Jewish engagement programs.   As director of Machon Madrichim,  Posen told the Winnipeg Jewish  Review  last summer that  "planned and led the LOL (Leadership on the lake) retreat / Shabbaton for 50 kids in Gimli in May of 2010 under Machon Madrichim."

Posen has  just returned from a successful second LOL Retreat and LOL in Gimli with another 50 Jewish kids representing  eight different high schools. Here's the link to  the flashmob done  about this year's LOL Retreat:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oo3DJVxHikE
