Camp Massad Plans 60th Anniversary On Site Re-Union for August 2012 and Other Celebrations for 2012-2013

by Rhonda J. Prepes, P. Eng. July 4, 2011

Massadniks of the World  UNITE! Camp Massad, North America’s only Hebrew immersion summer camp is planning to celebrate its 60th year anniversary in grand proportions with an on-site reunion, from August  24 - 26, 2012.

At the re-union former campers and counselors, etc. will get to experience a variety of programs including a Friday night camp Shabbat, Rikud Am (folk dance), Saturday tefillah and chugim (prayers and activities), Saturday night Rikud Zar (modern dance) and Marilyn’s fabulous Sunday brunch.

Sign up with your friends. Pick your cabin name and write your cabin song. Reunite with your former friends, crushes or rivals.

Do you have old Massad sweatshirts or  t-shirts--if so, start digging them up? Have you taken a shower in Massad's new showers--you will soon have this opportunity of a lifetime? It will be a Mechiah! Plan to experience the excitement of camp all over again (-- but remember, no knives, comic books, gum or sunflower seeds allowed).

Do you remember Maccabiah?   In late summer 2013, you will have a chance to partake in Maccabiah (again). Be a rosh (head of a team) or just a team member. You could even be a shofet (judge) or just come and watch the fun competition. Everything is a friendly contest during Maccabiah: the plays, the meals, the songs, and team spirit. Don’t miss out on your chance to win this time.

In the spring of  2013, Massad will present a Gala fundraising event with a popular headline act which will appeal to a wide audience. The main act has not been chosen yet, but promises to pull in people from the Winnipeg community at large

Are you a former camper, counselor, or board member? If you want to be sure to receive all the exciting details about Massad 60th anniversary please complete the on-line alumni form at http://www.campmassad.ca/alumni_list.htm . Further details about all three grand events will be available in the next couple of months.

Camp Massad summer camp offers unparalleled creative, interactive programming, a stellar staff, a huge outdoor pool, basketball courts, paved tennis courts, an outdoor stage, play structures, acres of private forest with hiking trails, and close proximity to beautiful Lake Winnipeg. But the 60 year old infrastructure is in need of maintenance and repair. Massad 60th celebration fundraisers will provide the capital to improve drainage of the site, level and landscape the site, enhance sports fields, develop a paved vehicle entrance loop, upgrade the parking lot, move cabins, build an amphitheatre, and construct a new performing arts building.

Camp Massad was founded in 1953 at Winnipeg Beach by a group of Winnipeg educators and volunteers dedicated to the State of Israel and the revival of the Hebrew language. The Camp  is committed to enhancing Jewish life and a love of Israel and Jewish culture through creative programming, strong leadership and use of the Hebrew language

Have you heard about PROJECT MACCABIAH: A CAMP MASSAD DOUMENTARY?

Salty Beach Productions is the creative team behind Project Maccabiah. They are a collective of enthusiastic new filmmakers and seasoned professionals.

The pinnacle of a summer at Camp Massad for campers and counselors alike is Maccabiah, a three-day, camp-wide decathlon of creativity.

This documentary will focus on a cross section of camp characters throughout their Maccabiah journey in the summer of 2011. They will follow a camper, a Maccabiah judge, a first year counselor, a senior staff member, and the camp cook, Marilyn as they give their all to this wildly unique exhibition of imagination, resourcefulness and sheer stamina.
