Following my inquiry regarding whether the government of Manitoba had received calls from new people with concerns about the Sharon Home since deciding on its full standards review, I received an email from Jack Marquardson, Comminications Coordinator,Communication Services Manitoba on July 6, confirming that in the previous week the government had in fact received "several" new calls "from people who had concerns about the Sharon Home." Marquadson also wrote that "some of those callers said "they had heard" that people are afraid to complain for fear of repercussions agaisn family members."
Mr. Marquadson added,
"I want to assure you that we are taking any complaints received very seriously and we are working hard to resolve the issues that have been brought to our attention. We welcome feedback from residents and their families and we will continue to do our best to encourage that feedback and ensure that residents and family are comfortable speaking with us.
"In addition to our ongoing efforts in dealing with complaints and concerns, we have also begun working with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and Sharon Home to undertake a full standards review, which will occur this summer. This review will look at all 26 of the standards the facility must meet and identify any areas that need improvement. It will also devote attention to care planning, engagement of families, and dispute resolution, which will include a review of the facility’s complaint process."
