Wanna see what happens when four sexy ladies over forty start sleeping with their therapist?

Directed by Kayla Gordon, with Debbie Maslowsky on stage--this play is hilarious

by Rhonda J. Prepes, P. Eng. July 20, 2011

Check out Winnipeg Studio Theatre’s production of Hersteria at this year’s Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival at the Prairie Theatre Exchange July 13 – 24, 2011.
Hersteria is a hilarious musical that celebrates the unlikely friendship of four women who come together after being betrayed by their philandering therapist. Each of the four women set out to murder the doctor, who has been sleeping with all of them. The four meet right in the opening act as they sing “Kill the Therapist” in unison.
Based on the book by Sharon Bajer, with music and lyrics by Joseph Aragon and Sally Fingerett, Hersteria is directed by Kayla Gordon, joined by choreographer Brenda Gorlick and musical director Andrew St. Hillaire. The cast of Hersteria are long-time veterans of the Canadian stage - Donna Fletcher, Jennifer Lyon, Debbie Maslowsky and Jan Skene.
The four collectively represent an incredible ‘dream team’ of musical theatre talent honed by years of performance experience in Winnipeg and throughout Canada.
Janine (Fletcher) is a kleptomaniac. Brena (Lyon) is a depressive alcoholic. Debra (Maslowsky) has obsessive-compulsive disorder and Sam (Skene) is a control freak. After they kill their doctor they are forced to give therapy to each other. The women are empowered by the connection they make to each other.

Gordon makes ingenious use of the props on stage and the audio visual display in the background.  She scores bonus points for audience participation at the end of the play.

The songs are clever, funny and catchy and are delivered professionally. There is a myriad of musical styles including rock, gospel, and klezmer. My favourite was Maslowsky’s song of swear words complete with its own macarena style dance
This is a great tale of scorned lovers who become unlikely friends and heroines. They set off on a crime of passion that ends up full of surprises – that you won’t want to miss.
