It's a good thing Cameron Johnston is a university professor with 30 years of experience in campus politics and student thinking. Because it would require a superior mind to make sense of the Kafkaesque (or maybe it's Orwellian, it's so long since I took English Lit) situation he finds himself in.
Prof. Johnston was addressing a new social sciences class at York University and explained to students that the course would focus on written texts, not opinions. Despite what many people (especially the young and inexperienced) might think, he said, not everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Reaching for an example, he settled on one that seemed beyond dispute.
"All Jews should be sterilized" is an opinion that is simply not acceptable, he noted. Prof. Johnston happens to be Jewish. York has a large Jewish student body and a history of clashes over religious and political issues.
