NCJW RUNS FOR THE CURE FOR CANADIAN BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION

by Rhonda Spivak,October 28, 2011

The National Council of Jewish Women, Winnipeg Section fielded a team at the Run for the Cure this September.

The Run for the Cure, in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is a"natural fit" for NCJW, and this is the second year we have participated. Last year Winnipeg only participated, but this has caught on, and this year NCJW had teams in Vancouver and Toronto as well. Toronto raised over $3600.00, Vancouver
over $3500.00, and Winnipeg over $4000.00 for this great cause, says Cindy lazar,
who participated in the run.

"We are all affected by breast cancer in one way or another," she added.

Lazar also noted that " National Council of Jewish Women has targeted accessibility to mammograms as a key priority on a national level, and, in the last few years, has actively advocated for the age for self-referral formammograms in Manitoba and some other provinces to be lowered to age 40 from age
50, so as to give free access to this important diagnostic test to women age 40-49. This would bring Manitoba in line with British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and with current recommendations."

.

The National Council of Jewish Women of Canada, Winnipeg Section is a voluntary
non-profit service organization which was started in Winnipeg in 1925 and is
affiliated with National Council of Jewish Women of Canada, which was founded in
1897 and is the oldest Jewish women's organization in Canada.

It is a is a voluntary organization which, in the spirit of Judaism, is dedicated to further human welfare in the Jewish and general communities locally, nationally and internationally.

"Through an integrated program of education, service and social action, we help to fulfill
unmet needs and to serve the individual and the community," lazar says
.

Next year's run will be September 30, and anyone who wishes to participate is
welcome.

Lazar says anyone interested should contact NCJW now, and "we will be
sure to be in touch next year."
