Herzlia-Adas Yeshurun Announces Fall Scholar in Residence Weekend

posted November 14, 2011

The Herzlia-Adas Yeshurun Synagogue is pleased to announce that Rabbi Yossi Benarroch, one of Winnipeg’s favourite sons, will be in town for the annual Fall Scholar in Residence Shabbaton on November 25th and 26th, 2011.

Rabbi Benarroch, a JWC Raider basketball legend from the 1970s’ dream team, is the son of Shlomo and Mary, and brother to Yamin, Michael and Al. He is the Executive Director of Eshel Sephardic Women’s Seminary, and rabbi of the Sephardic Educational Center, both in Jerusalem. Born in Tangiers, Morocco, Rabbi Benarroch holds a B. Ed. from the University of Manitoba, an M.S. in Jewish History from Touro College, and is a graduate of Mercaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem. He and his family live in Efrat.

Rabbi Benarroch’s Shabbat dinner address will be on the centrality of community: freedom or responsibility? His Shabbat morning address will be on Israel's new religious reality. He will share insights from Rav Kook, who was the founder of the Merkaz HaRav yeshiva in Jerusalem and was a Jewish thinker, Halakhist, philosopher-poet, prolific writer, and renowned Torah sage. He was one of the most celebrated and influential rabbis of the 20th century. Rav Kook’s positive thinking, encouragement, and love for the Jews rebuilding the land of Israel, both religious and secular, were legendary.

Rabbi Benarroch is a captivating and dynamic speaker, and dinner co-chairs Kim Bailey and Batya Gall invite the entire community to join the Herzlia-Adas Yeshurun congregation in welcoming home Rabbi Benarroch.

For more information, please contact the synagogue office at 489-6262 or [email protected].
