Machon Madrichim Flying High!

Machon Madrichim, Federation’s Teen Leadership Institute, is flying high this Chanukah season. December has been jam-packed with various opportunities for this dynamic group of high school students to demonstrate their developing leadership skills. Seventeen Machon participants were joined by the 3 Winnipeg BBYO Chapter presidents in Edmonton earlier in December, joining students from Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon and Regina, for the BBYO Convention. This opportunity to meet new friends, share ideas and practice the skills they’ve learned in leading activities with other young leaders from Western Canada was an outstanding learning experience, and tons of fun.

Winnipeggers spent time with students at Edmonton’s Jewish elementary school, interacting and playing games focused on Israel. They led three different sessions at the Convention focused on getting to know each other, sharing personal stories, and building trust – all in a laughter-filled format.

Machon was also prominently involved with the Rady JCC’s Community Chanukah Party, where they plan and ran several activities and provided 400 hand made latkes. They also were the lead limousine in the Chabad Chanukah Parade that travelled throughout River Heights on the first night of Chanukah.

Machon Madrichim is a teen leadership training institute run by the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg under the direction of Dubi Shlenger, an Israeli educator working in Winnipeg for three years. Dubi has weekly educational sessions with the 38 students, who attend a number of different high schools, and tries to offer an activity that is strictly fun every 6-8 weeks. This group has made a two year commitment to attend sessions that increase their knowledge and skills and become involved in community events with various community agencies. Upcoming events: January’s Media Training Workshop with journalist Jordan Kerbel, Together Under One Roof program at Etz Chayim, and a combined Latte and Learning with BBYO at Shaarey Zedek; February’s supervision of a Shabbat afternoon session at Gray Academy’s Grade 6 Shabbaton and a visit to Festival du Voyageur.
