L’ Chayim to the Trees! Tu Bishvat at Children's Museum Draws 150 People

by Rhonda Spivak with files form the JNF, February 9, 2012

Happy Birthday to the trees! A great celebration for all took place at last Sunday’s Community – Wide Tu B’ Shevat celebration at the Children’s Museum, hosted by Congregation Shaarey Zedek and The Jewish National Fund (JNF) Winnipeg & Saskatchewan Region.
About 150 people participated in Tu B’ Shevat themed arts & crafts, a tree themed treasure hunt, glitter tattoos, and of course the opportunity to play in the newly renovated Manitoba Children’s Museum.

Samantha Loxton, Program & Communications Coordinator for JNF was excited to see so many families participating in this wonderful event, especially when the Super Bowl was scheduled for the same day. “I am thrilled that JNF partnered with Congregation Shaarey Zedek on this awesome program. Tu B’ Shevat is of course an important holiday for JNF as it recognizes the significance of trees to the ongoing development of Israel.”

“We had very positive feedback from those who attended the program,” said Leslie Emery, Shaarey Zedek’s Program Director. “There was something special for kids of all ages and we are very happy to hear that so many people came out and enjoyed the event! We look forward to partnering with JNF again next year to celebrate Tu B’Shevat. I can’t imagine a better organization with whom to celebrate this t ecologically focused holiday.”

The JNF and Shaarey Zedek thank  the Forestry Branch of the Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship for donating all the tree samplings for the tree planting station and the many volunteers from Congregation Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood and JNFuture Winnipeg & Saskatchewan Regional Chapter for donating their time to this great program.

Community members are asked to answer their call on Sunday, February 12th from 2 – 9pm as JNF hosts its annual Tu B’ Shevat Telethon. The theme this year is: “Adopt An Acacia Tree.” The Adopt an Acacia Project is part of JNF’s continuous efforts to Green the Negev. This initiative is about creating a sustainable community. With your support, on-going research and development will provide continuous planting and cultivation of the Acacia trees, in addition to providing knowledge as to the long-term impact that the Acacia tree has on Israel’s environment. Help JNF turn the Arava Valley in the Negev into a fruitful, secure and strong community.
