Herzlia Dinner Honours Jewish Community Professionals

release, posted March 24, 2012

29 Adar 5772 · March 23, 2012 – Rabbi Ari Ellis and Dr. Earl Hershfield announced the Herzlia-Adas Yeshurun Synagogue’s “burn the mortgage” fundraising campaign today. “Our Shul, entering its 105th year, is challenged by the ongoing maintenance and operating costs of an aging building, which was built in 1954. In order to remain viable, we need to address the building’s shortcomings. Money raised from this event will go to retire our debt, and make way for a clean start with our capital campaign,” said Dr. Hershfield, President of the synagogue’s Board of Directors.

“Our target is ambitious,” states Rabbi Ari Ellis, “We know our congregation is supportive, and we believe the community at large appreciates the fact that Winnipeg’s Jewish community is enriched by our synagogue’s contribution in the areas of kashrut, ritual, and halachic interpretation. We have chosen to honour individuals at our fundraising dinner whose professional careers carried our community through the past forty years. This is an opportunity to honour our past as we move toward the future. Our honourees embody the finest Jewish ideals of  Torah, service, and philanthropy and we are delighted to thank them publicly for their many years of service to our community.”

Circle Thursday, May 17th on your calendars, and join us at the Hotel Fort Garry as we honour administrators Leslie Marks (YMHA) and Izzy Peltz (WJCC, JFM), Cantor Gerry Daien (Herzlia-Adas Yeshurun) and Cantor Judah Smolack (Rosh Pina), educators Jerry Cohen (JWC) and Rachel Fink (Ramah), Shochtim Shlomo Benarroch and Sol Fink (Va’ad Ha’Ir), and a mystery birthday boy who has served on nearly every Jewish board of directors in Winnipeg over the past four decades, and who celebrated becoming a bar mitzvah on May 17th at the old McGregor Street Shul. Justice Martin Freedman QC will be master of ceremonies, in recognition of his late father Samuel’s many contributions to Winnipeg.

Entertainment will be provided by Ramon Tasat, who most recently was in Winnipeg at the second annual Limmud festival of Jewish Learning. Vocalist, composer, and arranger of Sephardic, Israeli, Spanish and Classical Italian music, Ramon Tasat has appeared in numerous productions drawing worldwide critical and audience acclaim.

Tickets are limited and this event is guaranteed to sell out fast. Don’t be disappointed - call the synagogue office at 489-6262 or email [email protected] to reserve your place today.
