Nate's Corner: My Take on the Rady JCC's Teens and Tweens November 18, 2012-Iron Chef

by Nathan Kirshner, November 21, 2012

[Editor's note; Nathan Kirshner, a grade 6 student at Brock Coydon School has attended a number of "Teens and Tweens' programs put on by the Rady JCC. This past weekend he attended the Rady JCC "Iron Chef" Teens and Tweens program, which was his all time favourite. He gives his detailed original report of why that was below.]

Nate's Corner: My Take on the Rady JCC's Teens and Tweens November 18, 2012-Iron Chef

Was that the best Teens and Tweens I’ve ever been to at the Rady JCC? Maybe. I’ll tell you more about it.

This wasn’t the first teens and tweens program I have ever been to. You see the program is strictly grade 5 and 6 except one time somehow a grade 4 got in but I went to these programs last year when I was in grade 5.

The theme for this month was Iron Chef. What happened was we got divided into ten teams. On my team there was Natan, Uri, Jonathan, one other kid I didn’t know and I. The first course was sandwiches. There were ingredients like lettuce, cream cheese, peppers, hard boiled eggs and more. Like in the show there was also a secret ingredient which was caramelized onions. As soon as Simone (the head chef) said “GO” one person from each table ran up to get the ingredients. I was the person that did that for my team. So I ran as fast as I could to get as much as I could because we only had twenty minutes to assemble three identical/similar sandwiches. My team used challah as our bread with cream cheese, egg and veggies. We could score points by working as a team, being quiet and having a clean table.

The second course was dessert. We could either start with cookies or cake patties. My group chose the cake patties. We took one and put a layer of icing on it and stuck another one on top, did another layer of icing put nibs (cut up licorice) on it and last but not least a strawberry. After that they told us the results but before that they said nobody would be getting sandwich taste points because they found the sandwiches inedible. My team ended up in third place which I thought was good.

The next part of Teens and Tweens was your choice of going swimming, playing in the arcade or playing in the gym. I went to the arcade with my friends Gilad, Eran, Sam and Jonathan. The arcade recently got upgraded. Now it has four XBOX's with Kinect. It was so much fun. There were sports games and racing games. We stayed there until it was time for ice cream.

If you didn’t know it before they end every Teens and Tweens with their ice cream bar. They gave you a bowl with ice cream in it and you could choose your own toppings.

So yes that is why that was the best Teens and Tweens I’ve ever been to.
