Leave More Than Memories – Endow Your Annual CJA Gift Today!

Feb 4, 2013

The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg’s Leave More Than Memories endowment fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba was created to enable donors to support the Combined Jewish Appeal annual campaign in perpetuity.
An endowment is a fund that generates income which is distributed annually. A Leave More Than Memories fund will continue your annual CJA campaign gift in your name. There are hundreds of families who have contributed to Leave More Than Memories, and all are motivated by the same reason: Jewish continuity in Winnipeg.
Barry and Rena Shenkarow endowed a sum of money to the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba and designated the income be spent three ways:
1.   as a flow-through to cover their annual campaign gift in perpetuity, adjusted for inflation,
2.   for discretionary disbursement by their children and grandchildren, to involve them in supporting community needs; and
3.   for discretionary disbursement by the Jewish Foundation.
The capital in the Rena and Barry Shenkarow Fund will ensure that Winnipeg’s Jewish community benefits even if the Shenkarow family moves away. “People move away and take their campaign gift with them to their new community. Children leave and take the family’s capital with them. We wanted to ensure that a small part of our wealth remained in the community where we grew up. We also wanted to ensure that future generations were involved in funding decisions to benefit the community,” said Barry.
He further suggested that “anyone in their 50s and 60s who is still working, who cares about the future of the Jewish community and who wants to leave something behind should create an endowment fund.” A variety of options exist including cash, life insurance, vacant land, buildings, interest or part interest in income producing properties.
At the end of the day, the Shenkarows believe their endowment is an important tool to keep Jewish connection strong from generation to generation.
