Holocaust Awareness Week April 7-12: SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, April 4, 2013

We Remember our Past. We Trust in the Future.

Winnipeg. April 4, 2013. Almost 70 years have passed since the horrific human toll of the Holocaust was discovered. Winnipeg’s Holocaust Awareness Committee remembers this past in order to ensure a brighter future for all through a week of remembrance. The program of the entire week is attached for your information. We would, however like to draw particular attention to the following:

Monday, April 8th, is Yom Hashoah/Holocaust Memorial Day.   The Annual Public Holocaust Commemoration, featuring the Premier’s Proclamation of Yom Hashoah, dignitaries, students and survivors, will take place at 12:00 noon. Unfortunately, we have had to move the ceremony indoors, to the Golden Boy Dining Room, lower level, Legislature  because of the weather and the condition of the grounds at the Holocaust Monument. During the ceremony, the Premier and Minister Melnick will “unveil” the new section of the Holocaust Monument that includes the 250 names submitted as part of the Holocaust Monument Project. The project has allowed newcomers to Manitoba as well as those who were simply unable in the past to add names to the monument and thus commemorate their loved ones who perished during the Holocaust. We will have a live feed from a camera focused on the monument into the Golden Boy Dining Room so that a real time unveiling can take place and be followed by all. The Holocaust Monument Project, spearheaded by the Federation, has received generous support from the Multiculturalism Secretariat and the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.   (Staff and camera will be at the Holocaust monument for media. Pool feed will be available for media use in Golden Boy Dining room.)

In Tuesday evening, we will have the rare privilege of launching the Matas novel: Pieces of the Past: The Holocaust Diary of Rose Rabinowitz. Winnipeg, 1948.  The novel, part of Scholastic Canada’s ‘Dear Canada’ series, is a tribute to the Holocaust war orphans who came to Winnipeg. “They somehow were able to live with the past and create rich lives – the best revenge they could have against Hitler and hbis policies of extermination, murder and death”, said Matas. The program is presented by the Holocaust Awareness Committee, the Rady JCC and McNally Robinson Booksellers. Signed books will be available for purchase following the program.
