Swastika Spree Defaces Winnipeg

by Rhonda Spivak, Aug 19, 2013

B'nai Brith Canada received reports of multiple Swastikas being spray painted in and around the Saint Boniface area of Winnipeg.

According to the B'nai Brith offices in Winnipeg,  the swastikas were found  on Tache street, Goulet Street and in an arena. They were all located in public places, as opposed to private property.

“Hatred and intolerance have reared their ugly heads once again,” said Frank Dimant, CEO, B’nai Brith Canada in a statement. “Defacing public property with Nazi symbols is more than just hurtful to the Jewish community, it is an affront to the millions of people, Jewish and not, who suffered under the Nazi regime as well as Canadians who lost their lives to defeat it.”

“This latest spree is especially troubling for what the future holds, as our annual Audit of Antisemitic Incidents continues to show increases year after year. These types of incidents must be labeled as a hate crime and treated with all due seriousness. Anyone with information about this or other similar incidents is encouraged to call our 24 hour Anti-Hate Hotline.”

A week following the initial spree of swastikas,  Winnipeg was once agian hit  with multiple swastikas reportedly spray painted around the city.

According to the local B'nai Brith office, the swastikas were located in East Kildonan on private property. As of this time, the B'nai Brith office reports that there are no known suspects.

“The city of Winnipeg has once again had its name smeared by the actions of hateful individuals,” said Frank Dimant, CEO, B’nai Brith Canada. “The police should continue their investigation in to these and previous cases of vandalism and treat them as hate-related crimes. We will be closely working with the Winnipeg Police Service in this matter.”

“Winnipeg is known for its long history of welcoming immigrants and people from all over the world and we encourage everyone to report any and all information to the Winnipeg Police and to our 24 hour Anti-Hate Hotline. The perpetrators of these heinous acts must be brought to justice.”

B'nai Brith Canada Anti-Hate Hotline is available
