In response to one of the strongest storms on record, that slammed into the central Philippines on Friday, November 8th, killing what authorities believe to be 10,000 people, while forcing an estimated 750,000 people to flee their homes, Jewish Federation of Winnipeg has established the Philippines Typhoon Relief Fund. Funds raised will support the life-saving efforts of Federation's partner agencies, the Israeli-based humanitarian organization IsraAID and the American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC).
In coordination with Israel's Prime Ministers Office, IsraAID is sending a team to the Philippines immediately, consisting of medical, trauma and relief professionals. Upon their arrival, the IsraAID team will join forces with JDC and UN agencies in reaching out to treat the hundreds of thousands affected by Typhoon Haiyan which raced across a string of highly populated Philippine islands from east to west, triggering landslides, blocked roads, uprooted trees and tragic destruction.
As well, the Canadian government has announced that it will match dollar for dollar all monies donated by Canadians to appropriate relief agencies. IsraAID and JDC are recognized NGO's.
