special insert page for Passover haggadas that compares human trafficking to slavery in biblical times

April 7, 2014

SLAVERY THEN

“We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt and the Eternal our God brought us out from there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. Now if God has not brought out our forefathers from Egypt, then even we, our children and our children’s children might still have been enslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt. Therefore, even if we were all wise, all men of understanding, and even if we were all old and well learned in the Torah, it would still be our duty to tell the story of the departure from Egypt. And the more one tells of the departure from Egypt, the more is one to be praised.”                                                          From Passover Haggadah Ktav Publishing House 2014

SLAVERY NOW

Many of our brothers and sisters are still slaves in many countries in the world.

Men, women and children are sold as a commodity – we name it Human Trafficking.

Women and men, young and old are sold for

  • Sexual exploitation
  • Forced labour
  • Forced marriage
  • Organ trafficking

Young children are forcibly enlisted in war torn countries.

About 27 million people world-wide are enslaved.  (https://www.freetheslaves.net/sslpage.aspx?pid=348)

Hidden amongst us are those who remain enslaved due to violence, isolation, fear of being jailed, lack of money and no sense that they have a safe home.

“With a strong hand and outstretched arm”

Let us all join together to end modern day slavery.
