The Balding at the Shaw Performing Arts Centre as part of the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, July 16-27: A coming-of-age story of a young Jewish man coming to terms with his premature baldness and late virginity.
Nominated for the Just for Laughs award for Best Comedy at the 2013 Montreal Fringe Festival.
Jeff’s a twenty-year-old Montreal Jewish kid who’s losing his hair. Worse yet, he’s convinced he’s going bald because he’s still a virgin. Faced with no alternative, he embarks on a desperate quest to lose his virginity so he can arrest the terrifying hair loss process. Meanwhile, his utter distraction over this paralyzing situation leads him to accidentally destroy his parents’ most precious assets, one by one. As the situation gets more hopeless, Jeff comes face to face with his own mortality, and the frightening realities of adulthood.
The Balding is a hilarious race against time, nature, and the terrifying business of becoming a man.
Jeff Gandell is a Montreal writer, storyteller, actor, and teacher. His first one-man show, The Balding, was nominated for the Just for Laughs award for Best Comedy at the 2013 Montreal Fringe Festival, and enjoyed a sold-out run at Mainline Theatre in Montreal in 2014. His second one-man show, Danger Unit was a runaway hit at the 2014 Montreal Fringe Festival. Over the past few years, he's honed his monologuing chops at storytelling events around Montreal, and hosts his own monthly storytelling night called Yarn. Most weekends, you'll find Jeff at the Montreal Improv Theatre, where he is a member of the House Team. In addition to the Winnipeg Fringe, Jeff will be taking The Balding to Fringes in Regina and Calgary, as part of the Canadian Fringe circuit. He teaches English at Dawson College in Montreal.
Jeff has been featured in many Montreal news outlets, including The Canadian Jewish News, Radio Shalom, and The Montreal Gazette, who predicted that he “could well one day morph into Montreal’s answer to Spalding Gray.”
