NOA GOLDBERG: BBYO'S Winter Convention 2015

by Noa Goldberg, (Grade 9 student at Gray Academy), March 13, 2015

This year was my first year taking part in BBYO. BBYO gave me, along with many others a chance to bond with each other and create new friendships. Prior to Winter Convention, we had multiple preps getting ready for a great weekend. These preps were things that I looked forward to each week because of how much they brought everyone together and because of the fun, exciting projects we got to work on. We made a movie, songs, a skit, speeches and so much more. As WC was quickly approaching, preps got even more intense. Everyone was busy working very hard to get things finished and staying up late to make sure everything that needed to be done was done. When we finally began the convention, instantly it was a fun environment to be in.

We began the convention with the movies each of the chapters made and then later on, presented our skits that we wrote, our banners and cake! It was a great start to the weekend. The next day we presented the songs that we worked extremely hard to perfect, and each song ended up being incredible. It was easy to tell that each and every person put so much effort into what they were doing. Although the activities were very entertaining, when we had free  time it was also great. It gave us a chance to talk to new people and just get to spend time with our friends outside of the planned activities.

On Saturday night, all the members gathered in a circle and did a Havdallah service and sang different songs as well. It was such a nice way to end off Shabbat. Even though we were in the midst of a competition, they brought in a hypnotist which brought all the chapters together. He chose people from the audience to get involved with the show. Everyone found it enjoyable and very entertaining to watch! At the end of that day, it was time for “Life's”. This is a program where the 4th years talk about their time in BBYO. This is also a time to say goodbye to them since it is their last year. It was inspiring to hear what they had to say and what advice they could give the returning members.

This weekend gave so many chances for people to get involved and do things that they would never imagine themselves doing. On the last morning of the convention, the winers were announced. Although my chapter did not win, we were all extremely proud of everything we had accomplished that weekend and also the past few months leading up to WC. It felt like all the new members were able to find a place where we really belonged in the chapter. What mattered most to all of us was just being able to be a part of the chapter and being able to contribute to the convention in such a positive and impacting way. As a new member, I can definitely say that I had a great first year with this group of people and can see myself continuing with BBYO and getting involved as much as I possibly can.
