DR. HAROLD KATZ INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED BAD BREATH EXPERT : 10 VALUABLE TIPS TO AVOID BAD BREADTH AND DRY MOUTH FOR YOM KIPPUR FAST

by September 2015 ,

On Wednesday September 23, 2015 JEWS AROUND THE WORLD WILL FAST FOR 25 HOURS as they observe Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year

DR. HAROLD KATZ INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED BAD BREATH EXPERT REVEALS AMAZING FACTS ABOUT FASTING AND ORAL HEALTH

AND PROVIDES 10 VALUABLE TIPS TO AVOID BAD BREATH AND DRY MOUTH

“In addition to hunger pangs and headaches, fasting for long periods of time has a definite effect on our total oral health! Fasting creates Dry Mouth Syndrome, medical term Xerostamia, associated with a change in the composition of saliva and reduced salivary flow. Consequently, we experience an uncomfortable, extremely irritating dryness in the mouth. As well, our continuous lack of saliva causes bad breath, medical term halitosis, that can be inhibiting and embarrassing. Thankfully, there are things we can do before we begin our fast that will lessen discomfort and preserve oral health.” – Dr. Harold Katz, dentist, microbiologist, founder of the California Breath Clinics, Creator of the TheraBreath System of Oral Health

FASTING: A TENET IN MANY FAITHS

In addition to personal fasts that countless men and women take upon themselves, billions of people belong to religions in which fasting at specific times is a cornerstone of their belief.

Judaism requires men and women to fast at specific times throughout the year. On Yom Kippur, the holiest of days, fasting – no food or drink – from sunset to sunset, 25-hour duration, is one way to achieve atonement.

One of the Pillars of Islam is fasting in the month of Ramadan, and Muslims are prohibited from eating or drinking from sunrise until sunset. The Bahá'í Faith observes fasting sunrise to sunset during the Bahá'í month of `Ala', March 2 – March 20.  Other faiths, including Jainism, Taoism, Hinduism and Mormonism dictate fasting for varying time periods.

FASTING: HOW IT AFFECTS OUR MOUTH

By not putting food or drink into our mouth, we no longer stimulate the salivary glands and thereby prevent them from producing saliva, nature’s supreme gift and ultimate multi-tasker.

Saliva aids digestion because it contains vital enzymes and chemicals that begin the initial breakdown of the many components in our foods. As well, saliva maintains that delicate and vital balance in our mouth between harmful and helpful bacteria.

Saliva, with its vital enzymes and chemicals, begins the initial breakdown of the many components in our foods and thereby aids our digestion. As well, saliva maintains that delicate and vital balance in our mouth between the ever-present helpful and harmful bacteria.

A healthy mouth contains millions of bacteria. The helpful bacteria police the total oral environment by utilizing the combination of natural compounds found in saliva.  In this way, they protect the mouth from the harmful bacteria that cause bad breath, gum disease, tooth decay, sore throats, canker sores, and more.  When the oral cavity is deprived of vital saliva, this delicate balance tips in the wrong direction. Very quickly, all activity in the mouth goes haywire and the harmful bacteria seize control!

WHEN WE SLEEP, WE FAST AND CREATE MORNING BREATH

While we sleep, we don’t eat. In fact, we fast.  Repeatedly, we wake up with morning breath, that nasty, foul-tasting sensation in the mouth, along with dreadful smelling breath. Why?

We produce very little saliva when we sleep and therefore, our mouth is no longer bathed in    oxygen-rich saliva. For mouth-breathers and snorers, as the oral cavity dries out, it loses its natural protection and the anaerobic sulfur-producing bacteria start to overtake the area.

Saliva contains vital oxygen compounds, and this oxygen is the natural enemy of anaerobic bacteria, the harmful bacteria that populate our mouth and cause bad breath. Anaerobic bacteria live beneath the surface of the tongue and in the nooks and crannies of large tonsils where they can stealthily hide from the oxygen-rich saliva.

These harmful bacteria create odours by breaking down protein particles from food, blood cells, and dead gum tissue and then, by extracting vile smelling chemical compounds from their amino acid building blocks. These foul-smelling chemicals include hydrogen sulfide (the rotten egg smell) and other chemicals, including cadaverine and putrescine (the smells of rotting flesh).  Because these bacteria live on the back of the tongue, their sulfur production also affects our taste buds – and that’s why morning breath tastes so bad!

After waking up, if we skip breakfast or continue the fast, our morning breath will linger for several more hours. The vile odour, bad taste and dry mouth continue to multiply as the harmful bacteria gain strength and seize control of our oral cavity.

When bacterial colonies become strong enough, some types of bacteria form biofilms on the tongue that can change the pink color of the back of the tongue to white or yellow. With nothing natural, i.e. saliva to stop them, these biofilms can eventually cover the teeth with thick plaque.

On the other hand, the mouths of babies and small tots always emit such an appealing smell and this fragrance is commonly called, “baby’s breath”. Why? Small children are always eating and always producing abundant amounts of saliva, complete with vital minerals, enzymes and oxygen that prevent them from developing bad breath. Furthermore, small children don’t take medications, drink alcohol or smoke – activities that make the mouth cavity exceedingly dry.

10 TIPS FROM DR. HAROLD KATZ

TO ENSURE FRESH BREATH AND PRESERVE ORAL HEALTH

Based on scientific studies initially conducted at the University of British Columbia, to control the spread of anaerobic sulfur-producing bacteria in the mouth, we must first discover those methods that mimic the body’s natural, oxygen rich saliva.

  1. Drink 64 to 80 ounces of water during the 24-hour period before the fast begins to replenish the saliva. Dr. Katz emphasizes water – not Coke or beer!  On a typical day, we use up to 50 ounces of saliva and fasting may increase this amount.

  1. Avoid all alcohol, including beer and wine, during the 24-hour period before the fast begins.  Some people know that alcohol is a drying agent, however many don’t know that most of the popular, over-the-counter mouthwashes can contain up to 27% alcohol – more than an entire six-pack of beer! These alcohol-based mouthwashes with their zingy flavours and bright colours, create a dry mouth. They make our breath worse, not better. Read the ingredients.

  1. Use an alcohol-free oxygen-rich mouthwash, such as TheraBreath, clinically proven to increase saliva by 4%, a critical factor during an extended fast.

  1. Avoid toothpaste containing Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), scientific term for soap, before and after the fast. SLS, an ingredient put into most toothpaste formulas to create a vigorous foaming action, is a severe drying agent. According to recent studies, SLS can lead to painful and annoying canker sores. Always use a toothpaste that does not contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, such as TheraBreath. Read the ingredients.

  1. Avoid popular, over-the-counter breath mints and gum that contain sugar, before and after the fast. Sugar feeds all types of bacteria, especially those that create bad breath, gum disease and tooth decay.  Read the ingredients. Recent studies at Princeton University revealed that TheraBreath Dry Mouth Lozenges outperformed all other participants in reducing the symptoms of Dry Mouth Syndrome.

  1. Avoid acidic vegetables, such as tomatoes, and fruits, such grapefruits, oranges and their juices during the 24-hour period before the past begins. These acids remain on the tooth surface, and due to the lack of saliva during the fast, they cannot be naturally neutralized. What is an acidic vegetable?

  1. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of liquid, such as apples, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, watermelon, celery and carrots. As an aside, most people believe that eating parsley benefits our health. Not true! It’s a myth based on the false belief that helps people – chlorophyll only helps plants!

  1. Take all medications, primarily antihistamines, high blood pressure meds and antidepressants, immediately before the fast begins with lots of water. Over 75% of prescription medications have Dry Mouth Syndrome as a side effect.  For a complete list of these medications, visit www.badbreathbible.com.

  1. Do not skip breakfast or any meal during the 24-hour period before the fast begins.

  1. Do not schedule a medical procedure that requires avoidance of food and drink during the 24-hour period before the fast begins.
