Dina Raihman, an Israeli Russian educator who immigrated to Winnipeg over eight years ago, has opened up a Physics and Mathematics Integral School, an evening school which now has 70 students enrolled. The school is dedicated to teaching Physics, Math, Chemistry, Logic, languages and more to grades 1 through 12 at an advanced level, and is also designed to give extra support to those students who need more help and tutoring in these subjects.
"Last year the school had 30 students and now we have 70 students, 80% of which are Jewish," says Raihman, who was previously a grade five teacher at Gray Academy of Jewish Education, filling in for a year when a teacher at the school was on maternity leave.
"The students come to my evening school once or twice a week and the smallest class has two students, with the largest having 12 students. Students receive one on one attention, and are given 2-3 pages a day of homework, such that they can improve their skills in a given subject. The homework is about 10-20 minutes of time per day per subject, depending on the student" says Raihman. "It gives students the opportunity to reinforce their skills in a given subject."
"Our school features highly qualified educators with extensive experience in Canada, Russia, and Israel," Raihman, who has 27 years of teaching experience, adds. She notes that three of the four teachers currently teaching in the school are Russian Israeli immigrants. There are several Canadian student teachers who act as teacher assistants at the school. Many of the children attending the school are also Russian Israeli immigrants who attend public or private school, while others are Canadian born.
"We've never had anyone who has started at the school and dropped out in the middle," says Raihman, who notes that the price of enrolling in the integral evening school is $50 per month for one subject. (Note: A child taking two subjects in the school pays $80.00 per month and a child taking 3 subjects is $110.00 per month).
"Each child is placed in a class suitable for their level. A younger child who is very advanced for his or her age in a given subject will be placed in a class with older children. Each child is individually assessed and if a child doesn't grasp a concept, the teacher will give them one on one time until they understand it, " Raihman explains.
"We can teach any student how to understand those 'hard to grasp' subjects. Our main objective is to advance students’ math, physics as well as other scientific skills, and increase their enjoyment in all streams." All classes follow Advance Program requirements (AP), which is "unique" to the integral school which works along the Manitoba standard curriculum and dives deeper into the base units for further understanding.
"In the future this school is planning to be part of IB (International Baccalaureate) program in the middle years (grade 6-10)", Raihman adds.
"Our classes run Monday-Friday from 5-8 PM, and Saturdays 9:30-3:30 PM. We have two convenient locations in the areas of River Heights and St. Vital. "
