Singer Songwriter Anne Callaway who has written Songs for Barbara Streisand Performs

by Rhonda Spivak, February 8, 2016

Barbra Streisand fans (I am one of them) won't want to miss the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's "Streisand Songbook" from February 12-14, which showcases unforgettable songs from Streisand's extra-ordinary career sung by Broadway legend singer-songwriter Ann Hampton Callaway. Callaway, who is a friend of Streisand, is a Platinum Award winning writer whose songs are featured on seven of Barbra Streisand's recent CD's. Streisand asked Ann to write lyrics to a Rolf Lovland melody which she entitled "I've Dreamed of You" which Ms.

Streisand sang to James Brolin at their wedding. Anne composed "At the Same Time" for Streisand and that recording, Higher Ground, gave Callaway her first of three platinum records. Streisand later chose Ann's song "A Christmas Lullaby" for her holiday CD, Christmas Memories.

The" Streisand Songbook" concert which will feature timeless songs such as Marvin Hamlisch’s The Way We Were, People, and Don’t Rain on My Parade, and will include classics from Funny Girl and from A Star Is Born, as well as “On a Clear Day,” “Evergreen” and “Cry Me a River.”.

“Ann Hampton Callaway has a voice so rich, flexible and extravagantly gorgeous that it hardly matters what use she puts it to,” The New York Times has written.

Calloway who crafts a loving musical portrait of the iconic performer, debuted "The Streisand Songbook" with The Boston Pops and toured the show with top orchestras across the country in 2015. "Ann's tribute to Streisand is a glorious evening of great songs, brilliantly orchestrated and sung magnificently," said Randall Fleisher after conducting the show with The San Francisco Symphony. After performing the show at 54 Below, Callaway garnered two Awards and the 2013 MAC Award for Show of the Year.

The Cole Porter Estate officially recognized Ann Hampton Callaway as the only composer to have collaborated with Cole Porter, having set her music to his posthumously discovered lyric, "I Gaze in Your Eyes". Calloway was one of the creators of the Broadway musical Swing! writing "Two and Four" as well as several additional lyrics to the standards in the Tony- and Grammy-nominated score.

Callaway's music and lyrics have been performed and recorded by Liza Minnelli, and Carole king, among others. Callaway's voice is actually a household sound. She wrote and sang the iconic opening tune for Fran Drescher's "The Nanny" which many readers will know well. Streisand's legacy is in great hands in this show!

Callaway resides in New York, and lives by the creed best expressed in the Andre Gide quote: "Art is the collaboration between God and the artist and the less the artist does, the better."
